Just my 2 cents but Marine radios are the ticket, long range and good reception.

I'm an over -the-road trucker, and we live by cb's. That is if you can get by the immature idiots with base stations pushing illegal power.( and yes, some truckers. stupidity is very democratic.) The filthy talk that you hear sometimes ain't so great either. But it's the cat's meow for convoys. Use a channell other than 19, which is the road channell for truckers, for conversation and you'll be in great shape. As for choice of a radio, stick with the major brands, such as, Cobra, Uniden, Galaxy, Texas Ranger, etc. Whatever you want to spend. Stay away from from Radio Shack. They are overpriced and MOST of the time the clerks don't have the faintest idea what they are talking about. Wal-Mart carries Uniden. Old Sam w/sell you a good one for well under a hundred bucks. Have fun.........Ole Pork

  3. My cell phone is in the median of I-39 just south of Rochelle, IL. The one time I tried to use it to call in to my dispatcher I could hear her like she was in the seat next to me.....she couldn't hear me at all. When I refused to pay the bill I informed Verizon where they could find their junk equipment.

I have a CB in my daily driver. It's mainly there to help out-of-town truckers who need directions to get to places here. The layout of this town can confuse even the permanent residents. :)

When I travel I carry all three:
CB, Hamb radio and cell phone.
The CB keeps me up to date on teh Fuzz, the HAMB lets me do converssations and get directions and the cell is my leash for work.

Am I the only one that starts thinking about "Smokey and the Bandit" as soon as CBs are said? That movie ruled!

I though about using CBs to. My truck has a huge antenna ball on the side of the bed that is screaming for a 15 foot whip.

  9. Yup, I got one in my truck and my toy car (which is not a rod)

The one in my truck is a bit "healthier" than the legal limit when I have the heater on, and has about 455 frequencies....

well.... yeah.... how else ya gonna hear the speeds/times at the salt flats when they are announced?

to answer the original question, they are very handy. the guy in front can warn everybody about pot holes, the old tin behind the hay barn, and a hunnert other pieces of useful information. and the wimmin can make bathroom plans, too.

CB's are cool and a lot of fun when your traveling. I used to turn it on and turn down the quelch so I'd only hear the talking. In the mean time the FM was on with R&B playing. Used to have an antenna that was for the AM/FM and the CB so there was no seperate antenna, just the one for a cleaner look. After your out on the road for a while you'll miss 'em in town. I hope they make a come back. What's your 20 good buddy? I forget the sign for a short skirt in a sports car. Ah...the good ole days.;)

I have a hand held CB I use in my roadster. mostly because the roadster is used as a crew vehicle at Bonneville. A CB is a must there just for paying attention to the track officials and crew.

On the highway it's off, just like the radio, 'cause I can't hear it over the wind noise anyway.

Got a cobra2000 gtl base station, and a couple galaxy dx99's in autos, id recommend an older cobra 25 ltd classic or older cobra 148gtl can be modded easy on the modulation and rf power end and the 148 you can get extra channels above 40 or below 40 alot less traffic.my.02
