I need to use a crankcase ventilation canister in the valley on my SMJ 327 Chev. Anyone have experience with trying to fit that under an Edelbrock Performer intake? ~Thanks in advance
Notch the canister to suit and weld some sheet metal on to close it up. There was a thread here some time back, don’t recall what manifold the guy had but it might prove helpful.
I will most likely have to modify a factory canister to fit under the Edelbrock Performer intake and that's my #1 option... As an alternate, I started to design one for 3D printing (stainless steel). Does anyone know what the inside of the tomato can looks like (baffles) ? Anyone have one, a pair of calipers and the kindness of heart to give some dimensions?
I haven't even had one of those in my hands since 1991 or so. I flushed a lot of them out years ago but don't ever remember having one apart. If memory serves right I thought they has some sort of steel mesh inside them then as I would soak he ones that I was cleaning up in a solvent tank for a while and then flush it out. Some searching says that some guys ground clearance on the bottom side of custom intakes to fit but that would call for some real care in how much you took off.
I have a Performer EPS on one 327 without modding the canister and a performer RPM on another 327 with no mods, too. I've also ran an edelbrock C3BX without problems. Gary

Added a helical baffle and a taper to the body, so the oil drains...also added drainage channel at 6 o'clock on the baffles. Also made changes to accommodate support-less 3D printing in stainless steel (no overhangs more than 60 degrees)
I ran into this same problem with an old Edelbrock 2x4 intake on a early 327. I sectioned the canister and it worked out fine.
I think I might have one in the parts shed to measure. I'll look this weekend. I have a 90s Performer on my '60 283 and didn't run into a problem........that I remember .
Just curious, but can you not run the canister and use the later model 283 vent straight to a PCV valve at the carb, with a vented oil filler at the front? Or is your manifold not drilled for the filler tube?
I have the front tube, i thought I posted a photo. I did what you suggest previously, and was it was reasonably serviceable /9had to add oil now and then) until I changed from 350 to 411 gears and the sustained increase in highway RPM (2600 cruising at 65), caused more oil mist, which ****ed through the PCV into the carb base and burned slowly and I ended up 3 1/2 quarts low (5 qt pan) after 20 minutes. When I pulled the PCV hose off, oil dripped out. I'm surprised you're not consuming oil if you have no ventilation canister in the valley.
The performer is my go to intake. I have never had an interference issue, but it’s been a minute since I installed one. I always drilled the intake to accept the oil breather tube. The boss is still there, it’s just not drilled.
It's all happy , I have the outside road-draft stuff, just not the inside stuff. BTW, if you use a Zips' water pump riser, the standard length and angle of the oil fill tube (crashes into it) will have to be modified...

There are actually TWO different length canisters. The early 55-56 265's used a LONG canister, and installing any kind of aftermarket, or later factory intake, usually meant beating the heck out of it so the manifold would fit, when swapping to a SHORT canister would have taken care of things. The short canister is fairly easy to find, the long one, not so much. 9 fin Corvette valve covers were a one year only, 1956, 2 X 4 carbed 265 deal only, and as such would be a staggered bolt pattern valve cover, and not fit the later "straight across" version heads. What's funny to me is, the "Corvette" centers market the 9 fin valve covers as 56-57 fuel injection covers, when fuel injection was't available in 56, let alone on 265's. You'd think they'd know that! What heads do you have, or do you infact have the more common, 7 fin valve covers? Maybe you have earlier heads like 56, Power Pack heads? Just for the record, there are/were about 6 versions of the Corvette, finned aluminum valve covers used since they first came out in 1956. Or maybe the aftermarket is making/selling 9 fin, straight across pattern, valve covers now? You could probably buy the "kit" to install a PCV valve in the back of the block by the distributor ( a 65 block should have the hole, and be tapped for a hold down), or you could acquire the stock pieces if you're missing them (what' I'd do since the kit is just a rubber grommet that's pushed into the hole). A lot of guys have gotten by without even using the canister; that's one way to "top oil" your heads. The oil fill tube with the "rubber hose" would be an even later than 65, PCV valve item. It sounds like you have a collage of various year parts. If you do have actual 9 fin, staggered pattern, Corvette valve covers, DO NOT DRILL ANY HOLES IN THEM for a PCV valve, they are worth $$$. Thanks for the advice. That setup was on the 283 that I had intended to swap into my 40. It’s pushed to the side from the move, but now I need to see if there is a canister in the valley. I thought that there was only the little teepee cone hose adapter.that screwed down through what was the road draft hole.
you should be able to check without pulling the intake...take the fitting off the hole in the back and stick something down in there to check...a finger might even work (like a prostate exam)
