Technical ´34 Ford HotRod, update... pg.11 interior and roof insert

Harald, yeah, p***ing inspection was a milestone for me and really helped me getting my motivation back. This project almost got me to the point where I called it quits and if there would have been a decent buyer I would have sold it. But that time has p***ed and now it´s fun to drive and work the bugs out. It does drive great but not exactly smoothly, I need to lower the tire pressure and maybe remove a leaf up front. The Y Block was significantly heavier, and with all that weight removed up front the ride is a bit on the harsh side now... but that can be fixed....

 

Coming home from work tonight I found my favorite neighor ( aka Dad ) working in his wood shop . He started making the wooden frame for the roof insert. He is turning 80 soon and it´s great to have him around.

 

Really enjoying this build. Love the dash and the engine turned panels.

 

Thanks Billy! I wonder what product I could use to paint and impregnate the wood once the frame fits smoothly. Lineseed Oil? Clear coat? Any ideas?

 

Very thinned, so it soaks in, black enamel.

 

Baumi, don't use Linseed oil. on an application like this, with the wood being encapsulated and possibly getting some moisture, and sitting close to metal and paint without proper ventilation. Linseed oil can cause acids and rot out ash or oak wood.
I would rather use any given wood weatherproofing from your home improvement store. I have had good experience with BONDEX. I hear that in Scandinavia there are lots of good products, maybe someone from up there can chime in. Your next best guess would be a local boat supplies store. Another thing I would think of trying is thinned out Owatrol. It probably needs a long time to fully cure, though.

Günter, I had Tobi on the phone today ( he is the friend of mine who painted the car) and he brought over a box of boating paint for wooden boats. I have to read through all of that first but it looks like everything I need is in the box.

Hey Baumi...congratulations on this smilestone...actually many really...glad you kept the sedan...it's just had a period overhaul and it seems you're mobile with some peppy mighty mouse power...it's a sharp looking ride...please pm me if you are over this way...it's worth the drive to Lake Hambly...in the meantime always enjoy what's going on across the pond...

 

Stogy, our son will be 4 this Christmas and now that he´s old enough to enjoy a trip to Canada, Dani and I came up with the idea to come over your way sometime next July probably. We were talking two nights ago about this and we still have to ask my uncle and his family what their plans are, but it sure would be nice to see you again and benchrace , hahaha

 

I finally got all the paperwork in and went to the registration office today. I would have prefered to get a smaller plate for up front, but no dice, our county´s new registration supervisor doesn´t see the need, staff wanted to help me and tried and was super frustrated because of the fact they have to comply, but I got my plates and can drive the wheels off finally!
I´m as happy as I could be... so I just bent up the front plate a little and here we go. I also made a makeshift roof insert until the upholsterer has time for me. I spent 20 bucks on 1mm pond foil and tape. Should keep the rain out for the rest of the cruising season. We will be off to the Hindenberg Dirt Track Races Thursday night. Perfect time to put a few miles on the 34

The license plate issue is a tedious one, and unfortunately, the registration office is arbitrary—it's the same up here, unfortunately.
But you can now cruise legally through the country.

Our trip to the Hindenberg dirt track races went flawlessly of course ,because the car was on the trailer, hahaha. My better half isn´t into tenting anymore, so we borrowed my parents´RV and put the car on a trailer. I still had the chance to put some miles and smiles down and the car feels and drives great! Nothing to complain. Only down side was, my makeshift roof insert wouldn´t stay on over 70 mph... so what.
We are having a beautiful late summer now and I´m daily driving the 34 to shake it down, grinning from ear to ear!

 

A friend sent me this video he took during a test drive mid September. The 283 is leaning out at about 4k ( need to install an O2 sensor I guess, because plugs look great)and I´m still going easy on it, but I´m having more fun than a pig in a mud pit.

 

The weather got nice enough to put a few more miles on the 34 . I had a problem with the distributor turning itself in the retarded direction under harder acceleration. I found that the chromey clampy thingy made out of chinesium was bottoming out against the manifold before it would clamp the distributor all the way down... I ground it into shape with my CNC flap disc and voila, no more backing up. That little 283 runs like a champ, I´m really surprised. I have an appointment with a retired upholstery instructor next weekend, he is going to fab up a roof insert for me. I can´t believe how much fun this little rascal is, hahaha

I had to be quick cause our little one hates to be photographed, I caught him right before he could hide , hahaha , that´s why he got caught in motion
As you can imagine, we are having more fun with this little 34 than the law allows. There was a small car meet at a lake nearby this weekend, mostly late model Mustangs, Challengers, Chargers, Corvettes, Raptors and Rams, but a few cool old rides in between. Unfortunately I forgot to take photos, but the US car scene is alive and kickin over here. We are starving of parts right now, the smart guys in Brussles made it impossible for American businesses to ship parts into the EU by requiring them to have a partner company here who ***ist them to recycle their packaging material... how is a cardboard box in the US any different than in the EU? Sorry for my rant, I´m sure thing will be figured out somehow, but what the heck. My grandma would have said: "Think before you act."

Yeah, that's the Problem - they did think before they acted - as in, "just how much Pain can we inflict along w/extra Taxes, before they catch on, & get mad enough to tar & feather us". That's a long way off, I'm guessing... ;( . Nice cars, though...
& besides, seems most of that packaging is made in china anyways, just p***ing thru different hands anyways - so what's their problem??? Or at least could be re-packaged in already-used china-spl-boxes??? Hope you guys get that one solved, soon.
