Why not suggest meeting in Knoxville and paying cash in person? Or meet at a bank and have it wire transferred? Or Paypal F&F when you're face-to-face?

 

Having my learnt my lessons the hard way no way am I sending $10K to someone I havent fully vetted. Do an initial $500 payment via paypal Good and Services then another $9500 the same way. Should keep you under $10K which I think is a reporting limit Get him to pay the 4% fee or whatever it is now. Failing that $1000 via paypal and COD.

 

Like the scammers do with fake shipping, by making you think you are making a payment via PayPal. That or try to confuse the situation with irrelevant problems they want you to solve. As far as PayPal goes I've been a member since it started doing business without any problems at all, both as buyer and seller. I've used the friends & family to send money to people I know and am safe doing so with and I've used the business side to purchase goods from a variety of places, even overseas. I have over 1,500 PayPal transactions on ebay alone, both as buyer and seller. No problems.

Follow the rules with them, don't try to do something that they don't like and it works just fine. At least for me for a couple of decades now. That and don't get faked out with a fake PayPal site, pay attention to the URL that it says paypal.com and is terminated with a / and not .ru/ or the like.

 

With nothing down, he holds all the cards/leverage. If he balks at the deal upon arrival at his place, you're out the $1000 delivery fee-and your delivery guy. As @29Sleeper suggested, at least get the (unrefundable) $1000 delivery up front. If he backs out, he has paid the wasted delivery fee not you.
What if your delivery driver calls you from 500 miles away and says the buyer is not 100% satisfied with what he's seeing and is offering $8000 take it or leave it? (I don't know the buyer or insinuating he'd do that, but weird **** like that happens. It happened to someone I know where someone had agreed on a sale price but upon delivery started a renegotiation game).
He can deadhead there with a trailer or fly into Concord, look at the ch***is and if he likes it, go to the bank with you to make a secure payment then either hire you to deliver it and fly home or rent a small U-Haul box truck and start driving.
I flew to Phoenix once on an AM flight, looked at a (non running) car, made the deal including the seller delivering the car, then I flew home and was back in time for dinner.

 

Time to change banks. Find one that wants you, not just your money.

 

@Frames , what is the buyers Hamb name? It would be enlightening to hear his side of the story.

The bank doesn't have to wait until the total is $10,000 or more. They can notify the IRS if they deem it su****ious.

 

I'm probably getting a little off topic but I can't help myself. I've built and sold 40 plus cars since 1970 and never had a problem. I represent them honestly, have lots of good photos and have never built or sold junk. Many of my cars went to foreign countries with the buyer never seeing them in person. I usually get a fair non refundable down payment many times by Pay Pal to a FRIEND. and the balance before it leaves my shop which for the most part has been by commercial transportation. If you develop a good reputation for your product there shouldn't be a problem. We built countless 28-40 hot rod ch***is with an average price of 10-14K and I never met 75+% of the purchasers. They trusted my reputation and may have seen a ch***is at one of the shows I vended at. Always got 50% up front with the balance before shipment. Never sold a car or ch***is on approval. Times have changed and we live in a more su****ious/litigious world. I have a few items for sale currently on the HAMB and I've got guys that expect me to bring them to a show 1/2 way across the country for their approval with no investment on their part. Recent experience in Louisville, I hauled a simple banjo wheel down there for a HAMBer to look at, it was as described and priced fairly. Buyer examines the wheel and BAM first thing he does is try to hammer me on price. I said I don't do business that way, he turned and walked but the next guy was tickled with the wheel and paid the price. If you sell a quality product at a fair price there's no problem. I still ain't hauling stuff halfway across the country on a maybe. I've learned a lot about people in the last 60+ years since I built my 53 Chevy Bel Air hardtop. Tire kickers save your efforts for someone else!

 

seems like everytime I fold and abide by the buyers terms, I get in a transaction I wish I wasn't in....
I remember working for a fellow, many years ago, who said something like 'who has the Jolly Green Giant by the balls'...
PP seems to be loaded in the favor of the buyer....in my experience, if the buyer has a perceived problem with the purchase and PP agrees....there goes your money.....and a lot of their decisions are subjective.... how many subject matter experts do they employ?

I sent a $500 deposit one time, the seller requested PP F&F and I guess I didn’t do it properly, I think he’s still crying about the $15 fee he was dinged for. He’s held in high regard here and will go unnamed but I have my own opinion, some of the parts were not new as had been stated in the ad.

At 91 years old I don't have the time to chase anywhere. Besides I get lost leaving the county. I have a really nice income from my 3 industrial properties. So much so I converted the 4th property to a showroom for my 25 hot rods, race cars & tractors. I built them all..

 

NEW ad 8-17-26 on the HAMB. Same $9,900.00 but now $500.00 shipping within 500 miles of Concord, NC. I emailed Daniel. Same old price to him. $100.00 shipping.

 

Frames did exactly as he said when he built my complete FH short block. Local machine shop installed the externals and ran it on the test stand for over an hour. Performed exactly as Frames said it would. If I was doing another FH I'd try and convince him to do it again. Krylon32

I use Paypal for all purchases online. But to be fair I have had a few times where they they had to refund me money. The one that comes to mind was when I bought a used deck lid off a guy who offered free shipping and it had to be shipped across the several states. A few days after the purchase he messaged me claiming he needed an additional 55 bucks for shipping it to me. Contacted Paypal who refunded me right away. Then he messaged me begging me not to give him a poor rating on EBay. I told him if he was willing to honor his original agreement of shipping it for free I would not give bad rating on EBay.

My business is 100% legal and I do pay taxes on any profit; I file Sch C with my taxes. However given the deductions like home office, supplies, and mileage, after material and shipping costs, I tend to use up the profits and end up with a small tax deduction rather than tax due. All 100% legal per tax code.

 

I brought up the tax man. 1965 I built a circle track modified to show how good I was at it hoping to go in the ch***is business. I deducted the cost of building the car against my normal job income. Race engine, 4130 tubing, trick rod ends, mag wheels, tires, meth**** fuel , 40% to the driver. I got audited. Payed back $700.00 to the IRS. They said it was a hobby. Should have amortized building cost over 3-4 years. I would have been OK. !965 car 2 rack records. Ron Enderle driver. One record lasted 5 years until broken by a car I built. Al Schill driver. Went into the ch***is business 8-20-67.

 

Dennis, I feel your pain. I've been in the process of downsizing again and sold off my shop equipment for years and now starting on years of racing stuff I ac***ulated, I'm Hoping dealing with the racing people will be better. Much Memorabilia, eventually my Dad's Midget he built after WWII, I drove it in the early 70's and it's been a PIA dealing with about 25% of the people today, Obnoxious cheap rude *******s is an under statement, honesty, courtesy and common sense have become a rarity IMO. Several months ago this same Danial Woodrum said he wanted to buy the 32 ch***is I have for sale. He wanted more info and pictures. I obliged. A few days later he said he didn't have the money. Last month he was ready to buy the ch***is. I suggested a wire transfer. He said he would only do Paypal. I said no. He did not trust me. He's not really serious about building a street rod.
