Technical What are you working on?

Got the Dash, Column, and Garnish Moldings for my Biscayne in primer.

 

Took out the vacuum windshield motor in my 50 Olds and cleaned and greased it. Works great now.

 

In the past two weeks I installed the headliner, cab marker lights, roof, door and rear gl***, sent the 1929 Model AA to an excellent transmission tech who drove it for the first time to ensure the throttle velocity cable was adjusted correctly (it was, to a gnat's ***), checked and tightened brakes, tightened the steering at the box and tightened the tilt steering adjustment (homemade) only to have it die and not restart while on the garage pad, blocking my other two daily drivers. It took me more than an hour with the come-along to rachet the truck back into the garage stall and damned near pulled apart the bench, which was where I'd anchored the come-along.
It looks like it is getting gas, but I'll confirm that first. Then I'll check ignition using a cheap light at the spark plug. I'll check the points on the 351W, then the capacitor, then any resister wire that I think is still in the wiring system. I suspect the wire because it is a remnant of the Duraspark II ignition, which I switched out to a points ignition. During break-in it was running quite well and starting immediately. Like I said, that's the prime suspect. Your guess?

 

I decided I need to relocate the fuel pump and ignition switch in the race car. Well I did get the fuel pump switch relocated but not having any luck getting the tumbler out of the ignition switch.

 

Can I ask what you used for grease on the vacuum motor?

James, I see two holes in the ignition tumbler. Does it take both ends of a paper clip to depress the clip inside the tumbler to free it? I'm not familiar with GM stuff to know the "secret handshake" to free that ignition switch but I'll bet it's something like that.

I have yet to be able to feel the spring loaded that needs to be depressed so you can rotate the key to the left. I have never seen a switch with two holes in it like this one. I'll make another stab at it later today after I get dinner done for the night shift.

 

The lower hole is the correct one for the paper clip. I'd spray some brake cleaner in it and let it evaporate for a few minutes, then spray some powdered graphite in there and wiggle it a few times, then more graphite. It always seems like old grease gums up stuff like door key slots and ignition switches. I'll bet that's what's going on in there.

 

Was able to get over to my project yesterday for a trial fit of the grill I have been modifying. Will be needing some adjustment, but overall happy with the look!

Finally spent a few minutes working on something last night. It was only unloading it off the trailer so I could use the trailer to haul some hay bales and then swapping the front wheels, but it felt like work since it is still 100 or more every day.

 

shoulda brought it to my house to unload...

 

Today hot and humid with 109-degree heat index! I decided to fix a few things under the dash before I reinstalled the steering column and box so I would have more room to work. I got my AC going in the garage and I'm heading out soon. I am replacing the ignition switch for the correct one along with replacing the circuit board that is broken and jumped with an in-line fuse. Also replacing the door jamb light switch wiring harness and others. Not fun work View attachment 6807378 for a 6' 235 lb. guy with two back surgeries. I bought this rechargeable light at Menards (6 bucks). It has a magnet and a hook for hanging and it has come in handy working under the dash.

Hey Sam, I'm sorry. I thought you said you seen them posted already so I didn't send you any. I will get some for you tomorrow before I crank up the AC in the garage. I need to open the overhead door to take some of the pics.

They are reversed so I checked clearance for the caliper.
Needs about a 1/8th spacer

 

Maybe by next week I flip this thing around and finalize the front half???

Unloading junk

 

I installed the circuit breaker yesterday and today installed the light switch. I tried to locate the fog light switch, but the supplied wire was too short to use with how I was going to mount it (1/2 inch). I tried to install the ignition switch with light holder, and it took a few tries to get it right. I will have that done tomorrow along with the cigar lighter. On a side note, I can now do a sit-up or two to get up from under the dash!

O.K. How hard can it be to install cigar lighter in a 1950 Ford coupe? I bought a new replacement one and thought it would be a piece of cake. Also bought a new wire lead. The new one came with a new collar for the switch knob (smaller in diameter) and the stud to connect the wire to was too deep to connect to it. Needed to cut the new wire and put a blade connector on it to use it. I decided to pull one from a (parts car) and cleaned and polished it up (2 hours). I will install it tomorrow, but I got an OEM ignition switch installed because the new one I bought has a crack in the back plastic.
