Technical Do you say Engine or Motor?

I like that both electric motors and gasoline motors/engines/mills/etc. are all rated in horsepower. So no matter what name you use or how romantic you explanation is of the mechanicalness of the gas motor/engine/mill/etc. it will always one step away from the power of an old gray mare. lol

 

I'm stuck in the 60s. It's a motor. I struggle with having to say engine since there are so many cars around now that do indeed have electric motors in them rather than proper gas engines.

The whole idea of language is to communicate. If you say engine and the guy you're talking to understands, you're good. If you say motor and get the same result, you're good.

I can see walking into the parts store and saying I need some oil for my engine and the dude behind the counter saying "GET OUT. AND DON'T EVER COME IN TALKING LIKE THAT AGAIN. ENGINE...... SHEESH"

Whats next, do we say car or automobile?

In the 70's i did a Motor Mechanics apprentiship and became a Motor Mechanic, although i used to take parts to the engine reconditioners,cars have an engine oil and charging warning lights!! JW

 

Every engine is a motor, but not every motor is an engine...

 

Guilty .... . just dug it up and brought to mind several times ive asked what mtr. and got a what do you mean response . .... REALLY !

I use whatever pops out of my head, but mostly in my neck of the woods the most used is MOTOR, I suppose it has a lot to do with your location.

I don't have a problem with what people call the power plant under their hood. both words refer to the same thing. HRP

I am old school , I call anything that is not electrical powered a engine and anything that runs off electricity a motor .
