Hot Rods Anybody Used Epoxy Primer as a Temporary Final Coat?

I'm talking about, maybe a few years so the car can still be driven and left outside, while occasionally doing bodywork when time/finances permit.

 

I did it 20 years ago on my 57 pickup daily driver, I shot it in PPG K200 . It was always parked outside and held up well. After about 5 years there was light surface rust in a few small areas but I also don't live in a real ****ty climate.

 

I sprayed a test panel 4 years ago and it sits outside. Epoxy primer area looks good but the rest of the unsprayed panel is all rust.

 

I sprayed this PPG DP90 as a temp top coat in 2003, sprayed the firewall gloss and the gas tank PPG pitch black gloss a week later. the epoxy has been in the open since 2003, we have over 30,000 miles on this car no issues and still looks good probably will never paint it. Normal washes with car was soap and clean ups with spray detailer. I say give it a go!

 

If you're going to leave it in primer epoxy primer is the one you wanna use. I only left a couple of my panels in bare epoxy a couple weeks but it was a rainy couple weeks. Still zero issues

 

Very timely. I just used my first epoxy primer and I love it. Quickly decided gonna paint my 53 Buick with it, should last me out.

 

As noted above. Spraying PPG's DP90, was pretty popular for the " hot rod black " look, in the 90's/early 2000's.

If you are going to take years working on your car. You will definitely want to put a base of epoxy down, to seal the substrate. And do any filler type work, on top of the epoxy. And once again, seal the filler work, with epoxy. Any filler work that is direct to metal. Has the potential to absorb moisture and start rusting underneath. ( the filler can also absorb oils ). So its best to keep it sealed at all times. If you are actively driving it.

 

I use spi epoxy, I believe the manual talks about a longer induction time the better the color durability will be. They have a lot of great info on the web, and great products.

 

I've had Kirker Enduro Prime black epoxy on my '29 Ford RPU about 15 years, and it has adhered well, no chalking or fading. That said, it has almost no exposure to weather.

I used PPG DT sealer 7 years ago and it's holding up fine. No issues.

 

They do have a longer specified induction period for increased UV resistance. 4hrs vs the standard 30min. But, the general consensus on the forum. Is that you will need to re-coat it. In 1-2yrs. If you want it to stay fresh looking. It's not a long-term/permanent UV solution.

But, for the OP's intended use, its probably perfectly fine.

 

I used PPG's CRE epoxy and it dulled out in about a year.
Looked awesome when first applied

 

I stripped the hood and front fenders on my daughters OT PU 2 years ago and epoxy primered them. I was supposed to paint the truck last summer...She is still driving it and hasn't let me have the truck to paint. It is parked outside every day. I looked it over the last time she drove it over here and still looks good, but I don't know what is happening underneath. I don't trust it for a long-term fix.

 

Talk to the folks at Tamco or contact Tammy (formerly at Tamco) directly at REVOLT for advice! However, I can tell you that the high build primers from Tamco or REVOLT are DTM, so anytime you break through to bare metal you do not have to worry about any future rust issues.

I thought if you went to bare metal you’d be hooped as it is bare metal and bare metal rusts!?

 

I drove my J 2 or 3 yrs in this Eastwood epoxy primer on it. Should have left it. Shiney paint is too much work to keep looking nice.

 

DP 90 is a cast iron ***** to sand when it gets some age on it. At least it was after about five years.

 

Isn't "temporary final" an oxy*****?

 

If you live at high elevation or in area of extreme summer temps and it sits outside all of the time, be prepared for weathering in a year or so. Some will have better results but the extremes are not our friend.

 

The vast majority of automotive epoxies are not UV stable. They will break down and degrade over time with prolonged exposure to sunlight. It will protect the metal when out in the elements but would I trust it enough to spend the time and money doing a decent paint job over it years down the road with it being continually exposed to the elements for all that time? Absolutely not.

 

I shot my sons OT Barracuda in Kirker Enduro primer about 5 years ago. The car is in the driveway and looks as good as the day I did it.

And if you want the primer look forever, spray it with Summit Satin catalyzed urethane. This stuff is as tough as the gloss clear but us really flat.

 

I did that. Doesn’t have UV protection. So it ends up looking like this.

 

Is that Enduro prime tint able? All they have is black, grey, and white. I'd prefer something like red oxide.

 

This was my pickup when I bought it

The cab had been sandblasted and then epoxy primered...then it sat. You could see the brown death coming through the black primer, it had to be stripped and it was a ***** to remove! I used scotchbrite on a grinder (I didn't want to sand blast again as it thins the steel and warps if you are not careful). Even after DAing the lid I could not get the brown out. I used Rustmort to get it clean enough for paint to adhere.

Is epoxy primer a topcoat for a car subjected to weather? Not in my experience. If the car is stored indoors in a temp controlled environment and not subjected to the weather, perhaps indefinitely.

 

Billy, do you know what primer the previous owner used?

 

Any advice about tintable epoxy primer?

 

My 39 was 6 years on epoxy primer no problem
