IMG_6308.jpeg I am installing 2 new hose reels in the shop. They come with a whip hose to the inlet side. It has a 5/8" fitting, but I am having a heck of a time finding what I need. It would help if I knew what it was called. I need something with a male thread, but it has to have a female flare.

I'm sure there is a simple solution, it's just knowing what to ask for.

You need the male end of a br*** compression fitting (think of the center part of a compression fitting with a feral to goes over a copper line, or a plastic line, with a nut on each end), in the correct size. If it takes a 5/8 wrench, its probably a 3/8", or a 1/2" compression fitting. If you have a Menard's or other good hardware store, you should be able to match up the hose end with the fitting you need. Under the compression fitting area, you can get fittings that have the male (or a female) compression on one end, then a compression, or a pipe fitting, or a threaded fitting on the other end.

No, its a 5/8 fitting. It's a true 1/2" ID hose reel. I bought a 1/2" fitting and it just falls into the fitting. Too small.

The Male jic would have the same profile as the inside of your hose end. Could possibly take the male side of a compression fitting for tubing.

So JIC is the same as AN correct? 37*? What I am doing is going from a 3/4" Pex line to this fitting. i need a 1/2" NPT -5/8 JIC I think.

I have a 5/8 B-nut on the hose reel side, so I need a threaded male with an inverted flare inside. I figure this can't be too complex, or Milton wouldn't be using it on every reel.

Here is a pic of the hose.

That is not JIC. If it were, the flare would be female in the swivel end. It is a NPT female connection. Perhaps it is 3/4 NPT, if 1/2" "falls in". I really think it is 1/2" npt. Maybe someone gave you a 3/8 npt. 1/2" npt is approximately 1/2" i.d., no o.d.

It can't be NPT, because it has an inverted flare. It would leak like a sieve.

That's my hang up. Finding a threaded male fitting with an inverted flare inside. I am about half tempted to plumb this thing all the way to the reel with PEX and do away with the rubber leader hose, All of the hose is 1/2" ID. I did that on purpose. The whole shop is plumbed with 3/4" and I want true 1/2" all the way to the tools.

Here is the reel I bought.

  9. I keep all my airline fittings standard, if there is a hose/reel etc on special and it has a different fitting, I slice off the new end and install one which suits.

I think you are onto something. I ordered a pex to NPT fitting. I am going to do away with the leader line totally. I'll just plumb the 3/4" PEX right up to the reel.

try threading a male pipe thread into it just for giggles does the leader hose male end thread into the female end?

If I had the fitting in my hand, I could tell you for sure. I believe it is a national pipe straight mechanical fitting, NPSM. NPT is a taper thread, the taper will thread into the female side but may not seal. NPSM is a straight thread that has a mechanical seal onto the taper you see inside your female fitting. Check out Menards br*** fittings, NPSM is used on some faucets.

put a ruler across the end of the fitting, so we can see what part of it is 5/8"

hex? thread ID? thread OD? the hose?

There are spec charts to determine
witch style / type fitting .
If mentioned that is not a Jic or A/N .
I have seen before but can not remember
what its called Might been what lead me to look up identification of fittings & threads .
There's may , might be a European British?
Eton or Parker master cat , but both brands have multiple catalogues

JIC (Joint Industrial Council) and AN (Army Navy) fittings are the same but AN stuff is machined to closer tolerances, that’s why it’s considered aircraft quality.

Just curious. Are you using PEX or PEX-AL-PEX for your air lines?

Sorry, but can’t help you, but sympathize with your dilemma. Why is it that companies cannot put such pertinent/critical info on their product specifications? Knowing the connection type/size would be important to know. I see that their adapter hose shows 1/2” NPT, but I’ve never seen a female swivel nut used for NPT. Makes no sense. I went through something similar recently with brake line fittings and it was a cluster trying to sort it all out as the stuff I bought off of Amazon didn’t list fitting type/size either. Connections on my ****py hose reel are just male NPT.

I measured the ID of the threads with a set of calipers and it was close to .700”.

Interesting. So, just a standard NPT straight fitting will seal? Not doubting your expertise, just clarifying.

Yes. A machined br*** male NPT fitting will seal.

Thanks! I knew someone on the HAMB would know.

I think I have one in the 48 fittings I bought trying to match this up.
I am getting quite a collection.

sorry I was mowing the lawn, but when I got back to this, I measured a 1/2" NPT cap ID and it was 0.70", so I figured it had to be like they say, just screw it onto a pipe, and you're done.

One clue is that the "flare" inside the fitting is not a flare, it's rounded. That does not match any flared fitting.

The key info in rockable"s is the fact that a male BR*** fitting has a inside taper on the NPT end. Not found on typical iron pipe fittings, could be machined. In my mind unless the fitting on the end of the whip hose is shallow the pipe taper could get tight before the flare seats. Seems it would be more predictable with a straight pipe thread. Or perhaps it's intended that the seal is on the pipe thread?

It has to seal at the ID of the pipe.
