We were there also this summer. Did you get to drool over the blue 57 Caddy Eldo Barritz 4 door hardtop ?? That was my favorite by far, BUT far far to large for my garage though. AND they are a bit out my price range....Mitch

Good stuff !!! If there is something that gets me going more than hot rods and very old cars, it is radial engine aircraft. Sure do love planes with propellers

Was there 10 years ago. Great place. I was there the day after they pulled 10 or so planes out to fly and 20 or so cars to drive around. Almost everything there was air worthy or road worthy when I was there. Unbelievable collection of planes.

Very cool, that museum is always a fun place to explore. Lots of cool cars and some really neat aircraft. Last time I was there is was full of old bi-planes and some later WWII planes.

 

Where is this place ? I will need to put that museum on my road list as I travel around.

The sound was great on the planes I worked on !!! The plane had four 28 cylinder engines. Each engine at 4,360 cubic inches, 56 spark plugs, straight exhaust.......killer sound

 

Old cars, trucks and planes; Packards to a Kaiser to an Edsel to a Chrysler Airstream and a Ford Tri-Motor. And top 'em all off with a Twig Zeigler Funny Car. Sounds like good reason to pack a lunch and take along a change of clothes!

 

I was very blessed to be able to visit the WAAM twice over the last 15yrs. The first visit involved my trip from Iowa and Wisconsin to deliver a WWII Ryan ST2 trainer aircraft fuselage to a buyer in Pocatello Id. and then continue on to Portland Or. to visit our daughter.
Will visiting the museum, a lady in the lobby asked it that was my project on the trailer. We talked a bunch about me trading the fuselage that I found at a farm sale in Nebraska for lots of old car stuff from the Idaho buyer. We had gotten to the museum kinda late in the day. They closed at 5:00 but they allowed us to stay until 6:30 for our own private touring.
I especially loved the "pairing" that they did such as displaying a Henderson motorcycle with an inline 4cyl and then an aircraft with the Henderson engine transplant......same with a Ford model A coupe and an aircraft with a model A engine conversation.....great stuff. Even had and old unrestored sprint car in the back with a Ranger aircraft engine transplant.
Great place needs to be on your bucket list. Great part of our country.....great internal combustion stuff......great people. Have fun

 

Anyone know how Cadillac was able to buck the system allowing quad headlights in 57?
I`ve heard some states allowed and some did not.

Earlier this year I visited family in the Portland area, did a daytrip along the Columbia and went as far as Cascade Locks. If I had known about this place, we probably would have ventured a bit further. I love that whole area and the WAAAM is definitely on the list for the next trip. So thanks @chryslerfan55 for a great post.

 

Very cool. I've been told it wasn't uncommon for the Ranger aircraft engine to be used in late 40s-early50s sprint cars.
This is a restored one in my area that does exhibition runs at local ovals, great to see and hear it in action.

 

Think you kind of answered your own question. Quad headlamps were not legal in all 50 states in 1957. Actually that might have been 48 states in 1957. Many auto designs went into production in '57 with provisions for either 2 or 4 headlamps. I'd guess some states didn't strictly enforce the rule, especially when it usually involved lower production luxury models. And I ***ume most states knew they'd be made legal for 1958 anyway.

The article linked above seems to indicate that the 1957 Eldorado was a somewhat exclusive exception. The Eldorado Brougham offered the quad headlamps only and weren't sold in certain states in 1957. The Eldorado Biarritz was only offered with the dual headlamps and was sold in all 48 states. The two Eldorado models also had different grilles, park and turn signal lamps, bumpers and other front end trim. It mostly goes unnoticed unless you have the two models side by side.

 

Yes.....great picture of the Ranger. When I ran some vintage events with my midget on the dirt in Davenport Iowa in early 1990's, Gene Cunningham was running an unrestored Ranger "big car" he was a real legend in Iowa and surrounding
States in his heyday. When I hauled the Ryan ST2 trainer out to deliver it to Pocatello, the guy had lots of old aircraft stuff including a Ranger engine in the weeds. I tried hard but could not get him to part with it. Always wondered what happened to it. Have fun

 

Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum (WAAAM) is located in Hood River OR at 1600 Air Museum Rd, Hood River, OR 97031 (aka Ken Jernstedt Airfield). If you have never been to this incredible automobile and aeroplane museum you should definitely add it to the list of places you should visit. Highly recommend a stop. The museum has a very large footprint and there is a ton to see and gawk at. For the less mobile persons I do believe they rent power carts.
