1940 Ford Convertible custom scallops plus California Hardtop and roll up windows



Hello,

Custom hot rods can be in all sorts of designs. After beign a part of do***enting a new way to create a convertible top for cruising, I look forward to seeing more of the similar designs. It is a custom hardtop convertible addition to a normal open bodied convertible. The custom top is/was designed and created in Santa Barbara many years ago. It is/was called a “California Top.”

Here is an old story on the California Top:

I was looking back at my files and found a 1940 Ford Convertible I was drawing for my wife. She had taken a photo at an old car show she went to with her sister a long time ago.

I was so impressed with the convertible and the quality of the photo my wife took with her phone. Ha!

So, since we were moving into the grand kid days, we had to have a larger convertible with a good back seat. My first drawing was a 4 door and that bit the dust.

With some changes, I made a California Top for the 1940 convertible.


One piece, with the shape not looking like a bowl, but following the lines of a real convertible top... YRMV

With some subtle scallops, it gives some other custom highlights to the 1940 Ford.

For the most recent artwork, a convertible for my wife’s longing for an open top hot rod is still alive and kicking. But, the funny thing is she once had a 1947 Buick convertible of her mom’s, back in 1950 when she moved to Pacoima, in So Cal, as a little girl. Ever since, she has always mentioned a convertible.

When we were ready to replace her funky Corvair, we did test drive several convertible cars. A mid range and a sporty car version. Each had their minus points, to make us think of a hardtop for a daily driver. A hardtop made less noise than a floppy convertible top. Even with the windows rolled up.

SBC v8 power, A/C and sealed top to go for a nice cruise…all removable, of course...

Our last version would be a California Top to seal all road noises and keep the interior quiet enough for a good conversation we have been having since 1966. That is a lot of conversation. But, that is what has kept the “good times rolling…” YRMV
