Technical Dumb question about upholstery fabric

Try looking up Ciadella, they mainly do 54-65 Chevy interior kits but they do sell the various fabrics by the yard and alot of the Impala's had the different inserts.

Exactly! That's what I am after. Even in that color. Found this.

While the car itself is a custom-built 1956 Mercury, the interior upholstery has been uniquely tailored using a combination of pearl white vinyl trim along with vintage 1960 Pontiac patterned cloth inserts.

 

I got this fabric from SMS. It was from their 1950s era Cadillac selection. They had it in stock and shipped quickly. It’s hard to tell from the photos, but there are thin blue Mylar threads woven into it which gives it a little blue shimmery look.

They been perfect for me when purchasing and also samples. However I’ve read complaints too.

 

So, did you know what you wanted beforehand? I hate their website.

 

I wanted a 50's look for the fabric. I narrowed it down a Cadillac, mostly because my car is a Chevy and I wanted something from a "fancy Chevy". I searched Cloth, 50's Cadillac samples on their website looking through each year with their search bar. Yes, their website can be difficult, but if you search by a specific year and make, it's not too bad.

I wrote down the numbers of the ones that interested me and requested samples. They sent them out in a timely manner. When I ordered the material I double checked that what they were going to ship matched the sample I had in hand. It had been quite a while between samples and ordering. I think I just called them and had them look at it, or something like that. Overall I was happy with the experience with them.

 

I really like your fabric. I try to use their website, but about 90% of the fabric doesn't have pics.

 

Yea, since I wasn't trying to match something I just found something with a picture that I liked.

 

1962 Rambler has some cool colors and patterns

 

Go to old car brochures dot org, and look at the factory brochures for the cars you're thinking of. They'll often describe the available interior cloth, although they may some fancy GM-speak rather than just calling it nylon or wool or whatever.

 

In true DIY H.A.M.B fashion why don't you emboss your own fabric [with an Authentic "Roothawg" custom pattern]

You get a pattern drawing laser cut into aluminum. [clean it and deburr it]
Put pattern on a flat surface and staple out the velour fabric face down over it. Then Iron it

That stuff is smooth,,my friends ‘61 Buick just got reupholstered in similar pattern in green. No idea of name of material.

 

I’m not even sure of a color just yet. Struggling with paint color and upholstery color. I am bad about having to get it all Lined out prior to starting. I need a complete vision, so I don’t waffle halfway through and change horses.

 

I have a huge roll of this blue stuff I've been calling brocade but I don't know if that's the right name for it. It's kinda vinyl-ish, but it also feels very polyester/plastic. I used it in my fiance's Gremlin just because it was the right color and basically free (I bought a roll that weighs like 60 lbs at an auction for 8 bucks). It looks cool, but it has like zero stretch to it, making it very hard to work with. You don't realize how important stretch is in an upholstery material until you work with something that doesn't have it. I have no idea what it was originally made for.

 

This was easy to get 6 years ago… but I believe it may be harder now. 56 Fords had a lot of broadcloth fabrics. You car also shop a d****ry fabric suppliers.

 

I look at the specs a lot. How many hours of UV testing, double rubs etc. I haven’t look at d****ry fabric yet.

The Riv's only had 3 cloth colours in '64 blue, green and fawn so not a lot of options. From what I gather cloth was a custom order.

 

I know exactly what you're talking about in your first post.
I was talking to a fella at a car show with a 60 dynamic 88, he had actual dealership material samples in a thick book, he flipped it to his year and seat sample, it felt like silk.

I couldn`t believe how thin it felt and how it would even hold up, but I guess it`s a pretty strong material.

 

There were a lot of hot rods in the 90’s+ “ hopsack” which I called dyed burlap that really date the cars. Seeing it glued to window frames was the worst for me. Styles change so broadcloth of original seems to be coming back. Leather T&R is always in.
