I was going through some old Drag News information from the year 1962. I remember going to several Saturday nights with my own teenage friends. It was different sitting in the stands, when all of our own activity from 1958 to 60 had been in the pits and dragstrip proper. But, at least, I was with my friends and we were enjoying the drags at Lion’s Dragstrip those nights.

It was enough to get us pumped up for some of our own “Cherry Avenue Drags” adventures after heading for Bixby Knolls. It was a strange time after our own concentrated effort to try and get some experience racing our 58 Impala and our build/racing of the 292 SBC 671 supercharged Willys Coupe prior to high school activities.

Sanford Maine… is/was 3000+ miles away and it was like night and day. The activities we were involved in, took place in So Cal. But, there was drag racing across the USA, including the far East coast.

The results of any other drag meet in Sanford, Maine was obscured in the Drag News weekly files from 1962. YRMV

“The first official drag race was held on July 8, 1955. The Shaft Twisters club of Portland conducted the races, sanctioned by the New England Timing ***ociation. They ran a half dozen races in 1955, drawing over a thousand fans each Sunday.”

“The historical Sanford Dragway closed permanently in 1966 because the town wanted to commercialize the airport where it was located.”

“In 1959, Art Malone, driving for Don Garlits, set a new top speed national record with a 183.66 MPH run. Sanford was an NHRA track circa 1959-61 and ran on the second and fourth Sundays.”

Note 2:
In 1959, Don Garlits raced against some of the best racers in the West Coast. Then with their advice and a rebuild of his famous dragster, he set records in the West, prior to going back to Florida. It was a turning point in those race adventures for the East Coast racer and his group. In March of 1960, his group made another tour of So Cal races and attended the 1960 Bakersfield Smokers March Meet.
