Hot Rods Engine Identification

Can anyone tell me what engine I have? Its a small block GM. Casting numbers on rear of block are 23GM then 3970010 and on the front pad is Z161967 VO42OTJC Thanks For Your Help

 

010 blocks were all 350, 511 and 815( I believe that's the castig number) were 400s. I am building a 511 at this time.

 

3970010 blocks are almost aways 350.
Some are 2 bolt main but most are 4 bolt mains. Some even came with a steel crank instead of a cast crank. Many are also high nickel cast iron

 

Shows up as 1973 pickup for the TJC suffix code, on initial search.

 

The only high nickel/high tin SBC blocks from GM were some over the counter race blocks, no production engines came with a different metallurgical content. If someone tries to sell you one based on numbers cast in the timing chain area keep your money in your pocket.

 

Well, it ain't a 302!

Probably from a truck being the 3 letter code starts with a T.

 

it's a truck engine, and the truck was built at Fremont California

I wonder what the other two characters are on the partial VIN? it should also have C3 before the Z?

 

Now the fun part, depending on the crank and pistons combination you can make it into a 302 or 327 if you wanted to spend the money. It will cost a lot more than just building it back with 350 parts but you can have bubba factor bragging points for your effort.

 

Block don’t know crank it’s got. Bore it .030” put in a **** 3.875” crank in it and it’s a 395.4 …You tell all your buddies it’s a 396 and f**k with them when you open the hood!

 

If its stock bore , not bored, and a '73 cast, its probably a nice block . Oil stick on drivers and not a lightweight thin casting like the later year castings

 

Nope. There are no high nickel OEM production GM blocks.

I have one 3970010, it is a 350 cu in 2 main bolt 140 hp from a 1973 Monte Carlo.
