1957 Olds Nomad Station Wagon



Hello,

I went to school with a girl whose dad owned an Oldsmobile dealership near our old high school. She always drove a nice big Oldsmobile sedan, normally a 4 door so she could take a car load of girls to school, their Friday night football/basketball games, dances and just cruising around.

One of our neighbors had a 57 Olds sedan and it was stock. But, he put on some chrome wheels and “blurty” muffler pipes until he got a noise ticket from the local CHP patrols. So. his sedan was a nice local cruiser. He never drag raced his car as it was a daily driver to school and work.

When we started our surf adventures, it was just pull out the rear seats of the 58 Impala and stick the long surfboards in the rear compartment without the back seat panel. It fit, but stuck out enough to make us have a red flag on the skeg to warn others of a long object sticking out.

We liked the Olds sedan, we needed something extra for our surf adventures and sleep overs.

But, to make things easier to align, the custom rear skirts have the custom flames that attach to the original flames on the station wagon. So, if and when the skirts are removed altogether, the flame pattern is not interrupted. YRMV

Now, the skirt is a work of art for the garage until sometime later, when the rear skirt is needed for a car show or two…

 

I spoke with Mark yesterday as he is doing an original piece for me. He has been busy with a move and some other opportunities that might be the coolest thing ever but I will let him tell everyone about stuff when he has time. I told him about being missed, everyone likes to know they are appreciated. He will be back when time warrants. All is well.
Maybe he will post what he has been working on for me.

Mine is a very orangy orange. More yellow than hemi orange.

 

Just having a little fun here with this particular post.

Only us geezers of my age (73 ) will have the slightest clue as to what this is, and what it was used for.

I know what it is, and have actually seen them in use many decades ago when I was a little kid.

I know that many will go directly to google to try to discern the correct identification of it.

This particular one, is one I bought at a swap meet years ago.

The person I bought it from said he would only sell it to me if I could accurately tell him exactly what it was and what it was used for, and so I did exactly that, and he was blown away that I knew what it was and what it was used for!

I ***ure you all, it has nothing to do with vintage aviation!
That is the only non clue I will offer!

It will be interesting to see the various responses from the vast H.A.M.B. Universe!
Everyone's results may vary greatly!

It was used to carry messages from department to department? Before the vacuum pipe system was used . There was a department store my Mom went to . The office was up on the second floor. The clerk would take the payment clip it on something similar. Then it would get pulled up to the office and a receipt with change was sent down . But I could be dreaming this up lol

 

Yup, You're right. I broke down and looked it up. Glad I quit smoking...no cigar for me. Let's see who finally gets it right.

This particular unit, is used on a inertial kick reel and cable system, that is the medium that is used for the cashier on the main floor, to put the bigger bill in the wooden cup and send it up to the person that is in charge of the money, and the clip on the bottom is for the invoice, that is a copy that goes to the customer!

Now fess up, did you actually know that ?, or did you get slick and look up the word LAMSON?

cant say I ever saw the cash railway trolley in action, however my grandmother worked in a department store that was founded in 1849 and the building was built with an early pneumatic tube systems with really tight radii corners with the very very short shuttles (the later longer ones would get stuck). the cashiers were upstairs, and the sales people were on the shop floor.

I remember seeing those tubes in action from my earliest memory until the mid 90's when the store closed. When Grandma quit working there, she had been there for nearly 50 years
