Hey Guys, Im doing a model a rpu and refuse to cram a small block chev in there. I dont have access to any good flat head stuff and i need to have a reliable ride for a trip i am planning. Soooooooooooooooooooooooooo If i use a 302 and use a hei type distributor do i need a msd type box? Any advise??? I know , i know.....it aint a flat head....i agree but ya gotta work with what is around your area, and flat heads aint! thanks for the read guys!! Leon
no, you can use the stock Ford box. There is also a conversion to put a GM coil in cap HEI distributer in the SBF(it looks pretty stupid though... )
If your going to go with a Ford, why would you want to put in an HEI? Those are ugly distributors out front on a Ford. Go with an older style an put a Petronix in there.
Depending on what you already have to work with/budget of course-you can use stock HEI distributor/control module-but module adds extra/unsightly wiring.I agree with Frank,if you are starting with nothing buy points style and convert.Looks good and is reliable.****g'n
thanks sooooooo much for the suggestions. any links or pics of the converted point distributors? what else do i need to do once converted? Any dumb msd box type stuff? I dont know much about ford motors, but i do know a chebby cant go in those rails. Leon
Petronix is all contained inside the distributor body. converts point ignition to a magnetic pickup....reliable , easy and cheap..about $70 you still use a external coil Jeg's or Summit should have one for you
So i can take a roller 302 fi and convert to carb drop it in a frame, use the points conversion with coil and that is all i need? I told ya i dont know fords........
For piece together, junkyard components, you'd be very hard pressed to beat the stock Duraspark II with a TFI coil. It's got more juice than the HEI, is dead reliable, & parts are at the corner store. And yes, be sure to run the correct gear.
