So anyone remember M&S Welding from Southern Cal. It was owned by Mike Hoag and Sherm Gunn (drag racer), they built racing ch***is. At one time Pete Chapouris worked for them. I have mentioned before that my dad recently bought an old 1951 Chevy g***er project (unique because of its radius fenders, corvette taillights on the fenders and bubble hood scoop - looks like it ran a side by side crossram powered sbc with a stick). It was diffenently a show/go ride at one time as the whole front susp (including rad support and misc brackets and part of rear susp) was chrome plated. We have been trying to find some history on it to try and possible restore it to what it looked like back them. It was raced in So Cal thruout in the 60's. He found some info that showed the ch***is work done on the car was done my M&S Welding and we hoped that someone may know Sherm or Mike or have pic from around that time frame. It has a front snub with a straight axle and a 57 Olds/Pontiac rearend with coil springs and a two bar set up and rear disk brakes (car had 4 whl disk brakes). it looks like it may have had two calipers per side instead of one.. (looking at some old g***er pic I have seen this before,) we are trying to still figure out what calipers were used since we are missing the calipers. also what the disk may be off of.. ?? Looking at photo showing rear wheel you will note metal fabricated mounting brackets welded to rear end housing, bracket covers top half of rear end, picture cutting a circle in half, each threaded hole is 3 1/4" out from housing, distance between the (2) treaded holes to rear of car is 5 1/4", then as you move 1 1/4" toward front you come to the next threaded hole ( which we think is for a second caliper) from there all dimensions repeat themselves, 5 1/4" to last threaded hole which is also 3 1/4" out from housing. Rotor is approx. 12", hard to measure exactly, could be 11 1/2" but I think 12" is closer. Progress update on the car: dad is making progress on the car, the body is off the frame and the frame is going to the powder coaters this week and all the front suspension is going to the chrome shop as is the rear two bar set up to bring it back to its previous condition. the frame has been updated to accept the T56 6 speed ****** (updated to NSRA spec) and a 500+ hp sbc.. should be a fun ride So if anyone knows Mike or Sherm (or even Pete), could you show them the pic of the car (or send me a PM with how I may contact them so we can see if they remember it..). or even has any ideas info about the rear disk/ caliper set up, we would appreciate the help
Boones, the bracket is definitely for a double caliper package. The hole spacing is a standard deal for calipers and in Wilwood is a GT series or Dynalite model. From the info that I have in front of me the GT appears to only come for a 1.38" thick disc while the Dynalite can be ordered for anything from .38" to 1.25" thick discs. The hot set up for a retro look would be a set of Airheart calipers but the Wilwood would probably be a better choice for the street. Roo Man
more than likely it had airhearts.....dual caliper stuff ....thats funny car / dragster stuff......from the pictures of the cars i have seen they built .....top notch stuff.....your car probably had spindle mounts at one time....and a big motor....you might check over at g***ermadness.com byron's got a lot of cool shots on there....who knows ...you may ever find this car.....brandon
Brandon, I sent a note to G***ermadness and never received a reply back. which is why I thought I would try here on more time, hoping someone may know either Mike or Sherm or info on the brakes. anyone have pictures of what an airheart set up looked like (so I know what to look for). The wilwood info is really good. From the age of the from chrome, it looks like it had the spindles/ disk up front since being built. Not sure if it was run on the street during its time as a race car...
M.&S. did some nice work . Last I heard Gunn was working for Jay Payne , alcohol funny car and Mike was living somewhere in the Victorville area still doing some fab. work . Those look to be Airheart mounts .
I have not spoke to Mike for quite a few years but if you call Vic @ Control Cables in Santa Fe Springs (CA) he can probably help.Vic and Mike have been pals for years. He can be reached @ (562) 949 0455.The number I have for Mike is no longer in service.I met him years ago when I worked @ Blair's Speed Shop in Pasadena.Hope this helps
http://www.airheart-brakes.com/175qc2.html It looks like this caliper has a 5.25" bolt spacing. Not too cheep though.
There is only one brake line? Did you guys put that in? or was it like that? Wonder if it only ran one caliper for a while.
Some of the old g***ers & early floppers ran dual rear calipers ( straight axle front & no brakes ) I know of a few that ran all 4 rear calipers with one pot style master cly. The cool trick was a set of organic pads in one pair of calips to hold'r on the start line & a set of HD metalics on the other pair for high speed stoppin.
It appears the single brake line is the way it was. We think there must have been a 'T' the line went into before it split into the two calipers. thanks for the link, I did not know they still made the calipers..
