Damn I've been writing on here a lot these past 2 days!! I told the wife that with family in town, I would "refrain" from being in the garage. Try it sometime it puts a HUGE smile on thier face!!! Anyways I have been discouraged lately with a lot of similiar looking exhausts on "our" traditional rides, 4 long individual pipes, or 4 pipes into one huge pipe, ETC. Maybe it is ME but with so much of the same thing I think the look is burning out?!?!? AGAIN maybe ME, but I was wondering if a set of fenderwell headers would be "out of place" on a traditional looking Hot Rod. Traditional as in like 1950/60 and since a lot of us are into gassers, a set is not uncommon to us! Just thinking out loud I guess!! AND WAIT--- Don't get me wrong I know a lot of you guys MAKE your headers and I am NOT putting you down at all, I guess it's the gold chainers that are jumping on the band wagon and saturating the scene?!?!?!!? Anyone have any pics of this, I have 2 sets of fenderwells, maybe it is more popular than I realize and I just haven't seen it myself???....Ken
Bob Bleed's '32 Roadster. If I'm not mistaken, his Dad built the headers for the car in the early 60's, and they've been there ever since.
Just starting to contemplate this very question. Not fenderwell headers but something just a bit different. I always planned megaphone lakes style pipes but I reckon in 10 years we'll look back at them and they will really put a date on a car. I might do something similar but tone it down a bit i think. Old bluey is coming to mind. Pete
I agree that lakes style headers are pretty done to death. And I have 'em on my car. I've been thinking about adding fenderwell headers to the coupe. But everytime I get some money to do it, I end up buying go fast stuff instead.
Here's a picture of my buddy Gerald's sedan, I forget the make but they're the 'fat fendered' headers Speedway sells. I'm thinking of using something similar on the 31 truck I'm working on now.
Hey Ken if you have a set of fenderwell headers why not run them? In the true spirit of hotrodding,If you got em, try em. They look cool and are somewhat different and may make some power, what the heck?
had some nova's on my a .....weren't the sweetest looking pieces.....but the price was right.....lol brandon
Bob's Dad did not built those he had them built..The guy is still around who built them. those are 40 or so years old...and I get chills every time I hear that car start....
I'm glad you asked this question. I plan to run a set on my '30 A coupe. It's gonna be a late 60's early 70's drag/street flavor, with a 351 C running a tunnel-ram and a 5spd with a 4 speed pattern on the shift knob(cause T-5's weren't around yet ) Anyone know where to get a set for a 351 Cleveland? Or should I just try to find a set for BB chevy and change flanges?
Yeah, I've always wondered why anyone would put fenderwell headers on a rod? Plenty of space to be both efficient & look good, so why use headers that were made just to be as efficient as possible in cramped enviroment...???
If it was me I'd do something like this. It was easier to do than it may look. This is not the best pic, but the idea is there.
Hatch, Maybe you could explain what it is about them you don't like? That might be helpfull to people trying to figure out "If this works, why is that other one that's so similar not working?"
That's an easy question to answer...I don't lilke the way they look. No scientific data to back up my dislike of them....they just don't flow with the rest of the design....they pull your eyes to em and create a stopping point, or hiccup in the design, which for me, is wrong. The car is busy enough without that style exhaust. To me, design is everything....function comes later, after the concept is done.
