What's your thoughts on Rides tonight? Traditional with a coachbuilding flair was my impression. Why he didn't win the Ridler is beyond me. I liked the comments about true craftsmen. I think all of us subscribe to true craftsmenship at the core or our rod building. Your thoughts?
I didn't see Rides tonight so I can't comment on the show. I will however give you my take on why he didn't win the Riddler. First, let me state that I think Steve Moal is a true craftsman, you can't deny that if you've ever seen one of his creations. He does one heck of a job when he starts with a clean sheet of paper and creates a car from scratch. However when it comes to his Riddler entry I think he missed the boat. I think the car looked like someone had a J.C. Whitney catalog from a few years back and ordered every add on dohickey they listed and pasted it on the sides of the car. Everyone has an idea in their head of what a '32 should look like and if you're not going to make "cartoon" makeover like Boyd or Bobby Alloway then you'd better stick to a more TRADITIONAL approach to the overall look. What Steve presented to the show was a traditional shaped '32 with his wonderfully executed aluminum work "tacked" on the sides. IMO the result was a car that didn't showcase what he is capable of as far as a total creation. I'm going to catch some flak for this but that '32 was no CALIFORNIA SPECIAL (one of his finest creations). Frank
Levi Cl***ic, I agree with you on where the real talent in that shop lies. Unfortunately, the shop owner is the one "front and center" when the "attaboys" are handed out. Frank
I see your point about that roadster, Frank. I think the effect (with the aluminum add-ons) would have looked better over a black, or possibly dark blue paint job. Forgetting the COLOR he chose to paint the car, I thought it was really an incredible piece of work, but the darkish red just didn't seem to work with the look he pulled together. (I liked the dark red Chevy coupe for the Riddler Award myself, though...it worked on all levels for me!)
I agree that Jimmy is the real story. I made a generalization with Moal as the lead guy, didn't come out just like I planned. Does Moal do all the design work or does Stanford or the Art Center draw his stuff?
I was completely IMPRESSED-with the whole crew- they all seem to work to compliment each other. That was refreshing!!!!Jimmy Kilroy was here. ......hes the one!
