I'm so sick of "instant shipping quotes"....

Whats the cheapest way to get a complete rear end with wheels and tires from PA to MN?!

Can't. The seller hasn't got any way to transport. Plus, it's not too close to any airport I don't think. Not that he'd crate it anyhow....

Unless it's ultra rare- probabaly be cheapest to find one around here. What's so special about it?

It's a complete Posi rear end with wheels and tires... and I won it on ebay for $122.00.

Turns out that the location of the item is 26 miles or so from the Harrisburg International Airport... where ForwardAir DOES have a hub. (I was wrong about that one! haha).

    Does anyone use ForwardAir?

Does the item have to be crated? Or can it just be tagged and dropped off?

Have you thought at all of some kind of HAMB relay? If you're not in too much of a hurry that might be the way to go.
That's a rough one though- I'd be curious what it ends up costing to get shipped.
If the wheels and tires aren't anything that special I'd leave 'em out there- might save a lot of weight and cost.

I thought about it, but I'm too damn impatient.

I dunno why I'm rambling. I'm just gonna have to put new brake pads and an oil change in the Jetta, and filler up.... and go get it my god damned self.

    I get 26mpg on the freeway. I have a 12 gallon tank. That's 312mpt. 1100 miles there, 1100 miles back, so 2200 miles total. 2200/312= ~7 tanks of gas.

At $2.65 (high estimate) per gallon that's around $225.00 for gas....

so if I can find some way to ship this stupid thing for under say $275.00 it would be financially worth it to me.

If not, I'll just do it myself.

I had a complete early Ford front end sent from CA to IL by Forward Air for aobut $125. I would build a box around and ship it that way. Or, maybe you can ship it via FedEx Ground w/o the wheels and tires (you can ship those separate if they're worth it).

I hate to say it- but how commited are you to this deal? It's already over? I'd have imagined you could have found something around town for cheaper than the shipping alone- maybe on the Traditionals forum- ("Mark" on there just was trying to sell a 10 bolt GM posi with engine and transmission extra for free for $150 total! I think Johnny C. finally bought it.) Might consider asking your Ebay seller if they'd take $20 bucks to forget it and then they could relist it and you could look around here. I bet Johnny C. would let it go to you pretty cheap- you could even let him keep the engine and transmission.

Okay, seller is pulling the wheels and tires off of it, and pulling the arms off and duct taping them inline so they don't increase the size, which saves me some.

    Measurements are 60x16x16. Weight 215. Cl*** 100.

If anyone else has anymore ideas I'd appreciate it. :D

    UPS FREIGHT: $378.00
    FED EX: $533.00
Forward Air: $203.00 (But I would need to find some way to palletize it.)

  17. Have you tried BenD here on the board? I know he does this kind of thing and there has to be others here as well. Check the HAMB O'Dex for other guys.

If you're really impatient, fire up that Jetta, and bring your RPU seats to me for that upholstery we talked about on your way east. I don't have to start it right away and you can save a trip!:D

Zach has offered a few times to help you out. Let him know where it is, and maybe you guys can work something out.

I would think that as long as you securely strap it down to a pallet, it wouldn't need to be fulled boxed and enclosed.

Greyhound will cost you around $80-$100. It dosen't need to be boxed. All he has to do is put a label on it and take it down to Greyhound. I would remove the wheels & tires to make it as light as possible. It will ship to the nearest Greyhound station to you and you will need to pick it up there. It is by far the cheapest way to ship big heavy stuff.

forward air, doesn't ship by air, fyi.
best way is chris truck line, old dominion freight, etc and have it shipped business to business, then if its on a pallet and tagged, you're good to go.

    Jamal-

If you do want to get it shipped to a business- you could probabaly have it shipped to the shop I work at over in Highland. I'm thinking it can't be more than 5 miles or so from where you are at and it might save you some money.
Otherwise if it comes Greyhound probabaly have it sent to downtown MPLS. I had to pick up a fender there a few years ago. Not too bad to get in and out of- right near First Avenue club.

Forward Air is the most cost effective in my experience. Only problem is that they are a hub to hub shipper and may not be eaasy for you to get to.

Thanks again for the replies guys.

I would love to be able to ship via greyhound. Problem is, they have a 100# limit from what I understand, and this rearend is definitely well over 100#.

Shipping forward air will be cheapest, but the problem lies in that the guy doesn't have any way to get it from the location it is at to the forward air terminal.

The location where the rear end is is 27 miles from Forward Air.

I live in S Mpls, which is 6 miles from the airport, so that's all good.

    I dunno.... haha

What has worked for me: Secure it to a pallet with cheap motorcycle ratchet tie downs. Drop it off at a company like forward air and then pick it up at the forward air dock near you. when you ship dock to dock like that it saves loads of cash. I had an engine shipped from georgia to Ohio and it was strapped to a pallet and dropped off and picked up at the trucking companys dock 160.00. I considered that cheap.

That would be PRIME... if I had any way to get it to a forward air dock. haha

  28. Contact local tow services. If it's on a pallet they can drag it onto a rollback and take it to the frieght terminal.

  29. The impression I'm getting is it's in some guys yard or garage, and he doesn't have either a truck or the desire to drop the item anywhere, so it must be picked up from it's exact current location, and is not on a pallet. Is this correct?

It's not palletized, and it's at a location that was an estate sale. The guy who sold it was selling the items of the estate for the family.

But yes, you are right. :D
