I just bought this 64 Olds. Ive got most of the mechanicals worked out and Im gonna lower it saturday. The idea with this car is to get it done for autorama this year and use it as my daily driver during the summer to make sure all the bugs are worked out and give it to my dad for his birthday in august. as is always the color is the hardest to pick. Two more blocks and its ready for paint. i know i want to do a suede body and a flaked roof. any ideas?
2 tone, deep blue flat metallic on bottom and light blue flaked roof, with some light blue flake inlays on some panels, and in the interior.
Dynamic88 will hopefully post pic of his 64, but it's dark metallic green with a white roof. Kansas also has a 64, but his has a blue body with a white metal flake roof with a panel job by Gary C. What you're doing is great! My girlfriend is doing the same thing for her dad with a 51 Merc. As for color, ask him... but don't give it away. Work it into a conversation and ask him what colors he thinks look cool on 60s cars. Get some ideas. When you have a good one, maybe with a little of your own personal taste, too, ask him again. Maybe say "I saw this car at a show painted like ***. I thought it was pretty neat. What do you think?" or tell him you have a friend trying to decide between color sceme X and color scheme Y and they want an "old timer's" opinion for that real traditional look.
Very cool car. Colors would depend on what color the interior is, makes a big difference, unless it's black/white or you're willing to totally change the interior colors. If I repaint my '64 Olds, it's going to have a white roof and a green metallic body. Not super-chunky bass boat flake, just enough to make it stand out. For now, mine's just boring old white. Bags are in, but I still need some Astro's and bellflowers, just like yours has, it looks great on your car, hope it looks good on mine. Here's a couple of bad pics of it.
Dynamic88's car in the dust bowl that was the Pileup '06 Kansas' car at the same dust bowl hopefully they'll both be able to come on and post some better pics.
He said the car would look good in DP90 with a red flake roof. But I want the car to stand out not blend in.
If he's digging black with a red flake roof, do that combo, but shiney black and a red flake roof. I wouldn't go with DP90....too overdone, shitty finish. If he's hell bent on that flat/red flake combo, use at least satin.
Thats funny that you own that thing now that cars like the town whore. i sure dont miss freezing my ass of in it. i like the red that used to be on it and a white top.
Brian, u got that right.Whats it now 4 owners around here in the last year. I think this is the last time its gonna change hands for a while though.
Isn't the interior mostly a tan color?, Here it is sitting in front of my Aunt's house in R.O. last Feb., I did a photochop of it back then, black satin (not flat, just not shiny either), burnt orange flake with matching fogged in panels on the body and supremes with narrow WW. I left the pipe insulation on as a custom feature.
Thanks for posting the Pileup pics of my Olds already, Joe. Here a few more from my files. One more lousy one of mine, and others I found for inspiration. These 88s can make cool, standout mild kustom cruisers in a sea of early 60s Chevy Impalas. JR
Why Not paint the whole thing in royal Blue with Dark blue satin accents along the body lines? real subtle though.
I like the color it is now.. possibly you could do a little yellowish fade along the body lines like on gene's maybelline caddy
Its just in yellow primer right now but i thought of that too. I think yellow would look really good on the car. But then again im not sure how much dad would like yellow.
I could see it as a four door hardtop....lower, and with the rear doors suicide style, like an early sixties Lincoln.
