My son just lost the harmonic balancer on his 200ci Ford six cylinder. The rubber came out of it and it took a dump. I have a 170ci Ford six cylinder in the shop, question is, are they the same balancer? They are both the same year, but I did not know if the internals in these motors were the same and if they used the same balancer.
A few days ago there was a posting about hotrodding a Ford 6 cylinder 144 engine. A few guys seemed to be pretty familiar with the 144, 170 and 200. You might try editing and re-***ling this thread to attract the experts on those engines. Just a suggestion.
It's the same and will work fine. That family of engine is all internally balanced so there is no weight on any of the balancers. It's pretty common for the rubber to fail on those balancers. Congrats on havin' a spare! Chicken (owner of the '60 Falcon......slowest car at the '06 HAMB Drags, lol)
If the replacement damper is the same size as the original, it should work ok. Often longer stroke engines have heavier dampers, as there is more crank deflection and more damping is needed. the 200 has a longer stroke than the 170.
the 'harmonic damper' does what its name implies, 'dampens' the oscillations in the crankshaft, and they need to be checked as they will do exactly what this one did. they are especially needed on 'Inline' engines, as they can really set up a 'wiggle' on the crank. Anew one would probably give the crank a longer life, and smooth it out too.
