I'm probably a *****. I found this in the back room at work the other day, snapped a pic. What the hell is it? It looks like wire cutters and crimpers, but what's with the hooked and pointed end and edge?
Looks to me like barbed wire pliers. Cutter, hammer for hammering in staples, pointed end for pulling out staples. Used by actual cowboys before Brokeback Mountain.
They look like fencing pliers. Maybe the hooked end is for digging in under staples when doing repairs?
You can actually stretch barb wire by making a loop and catching the loop with the hooked end and just rocking it on the curved edge like a lever until you pull the wire tight. Handy tool for fence repair.
I thought the guys in that movie were sheepboys, not cowboys.. (or sheeppokes instead of cowpokes.. ) Mutt
Just helpin' it over the fence is all... It's a castrating tool. You can use it on both sheep and cows Yeah... you use the hammer side to put 'em under, then the clippers to snip 'em, and the pointed side it to defend yourself if they wake-up... Have fun with 'em. Hope you don't get throwed over the fence. JOE
They are called "Fencing Pliers" I have a couple pair of them in the shop. some have 1 picher on the top and the others have two pichers to grab electric fence wire that is a lot smaller gauge. Gumpa
Looks like your tool is missing. Not to worry. Automotive Stud has one but he dosen't know what if is used for.
Those are definitely 'fencing pliers'. My Grandad introduced me to a pair of those at a very early age, as he pointed to a long stretch of fence and told me to .... 'git er done'. So you see, that's not a new phrase either. The pointed side is used to pull 'steeples' by pounding with a hammer on the other side of the pliers. The 'teeth' at the end of the pliers is used to 'tie stays' into a fence.
Na, What's the season? Mating season! What's the reason? Don't need no reason! That's what a couple old bikers at work told me one day anyway.
Also, look at the funny shaped opening on the hinge end of the forward jaw, kinda a cross shape... That can be used to twist the strands of barbed wire together...or apart. You can cut a single strand, unravel, cut second strand a bit farther along, and be able to re-attach the wire by twisting strands back together.
