I go with the big dog theory, My grandma has the nicest german shepard that follows here everywhere but would take your arm off in a minute if you touched her, my aunt has 2 retired police dogs that love her and only her, and my 105lb rot shepard mix that my 3 kids ride like a horse will definately wake you up if you come through the gate unanounced...... I have had alarm systems and they do work but are usually more trouble than their worth, (the alarm signs in the yard work better) .. Dogs are cheeper and if well trained are alot better (the only negative is picking up dog do).

Anyone on here know a good dog trainer in Ok that is close, may give you another option to look at... sometimes they know of dogs that are up for adoption... My aunt got both the poice dogs for a small adopton fee.. and they are incredibly well trained but at 7 or 8 years old they get a little slow for police work but not for what you want......

We can go on and on about the gun thing I am a redneck of course and have several...

  3. Roothawg,,I'm glad your grampa wasn't hurt.
    Mine wasn't so fortunate.
My grampa was 85 and about 10 years ago,was choked/strangled to death in the kitchen of his home by a 19 yr old 'banger that lived across the street.
After he killed grampa,he took a **** on the floor in the living room, stole a 32" TV we all chipped in to buy for him, stole a couple cases of Pepsi,& stole his car.
They caught the guy a day later. We tried for the death penalty,to no avail. They gave him 17 yrs in prison. He's in a 'club med' style facility in Santa Barbara watching the latest DVDs,eating well & lifting weights.
Even though he was 85,my grampa still drove, played golf, drank beer, looked at girls,& also took care of my grama everyday who was suffering from dementia/alzheimers in a hospital. He was also part of the pit crew for my dad at the very first March Meet in 1959.
Needless to say, this time of year is hard on our familiy because of this.It was difficult to sit in court looking at the back of this *****s shaven, tatooed,******* head knowing what he did.
    He'll be out of 'jail' soon,& I'm sure he'll be a rehabilitated,upstanding citizen upon his release....yeah rite.
    I'm waiting.
Once again Roothawg, make sure your gramps is safe as possible from here on out.
    Sorry for the hijack-rant.

No problem man. We are no stranger to violent crimes. My younger sister was murdered in 2000. I am all too familiar with the judicial system in Oklahoma.

We got my 90 y/o grandmother one of those "pendants" you wear around your neck. Hit the ****on and "help" is coming. She's used it several times - it was worth it.

The system we have works liek this - she hits the ****on and immediately is contacted by a person at this company - via a intercom they put in the home - if they get no response they call a list of family members - if no family members are available they call the cops.

Other services are available - some that automatically call 911.

    FYI

12 guage -pump 000 and slug. nothing says "get out" like the sound of racking one into the chamber. good shot, bad shot, doesn't matter. 5 feet of fire and a thunderclap and even superman is thinking about leaving.

30-06. got away, eh? the real way to "reach out and touch someone"

Pit bull. sadly enough, you would feel the cold, clammy nose of love. he might lick you to death, but at least he barks to let you know he's happy to see you. (but don't pet the cat, she'll take your arm off!:D )

pistols in a dark house are kind of a bad idea. unless, you have LOTS of bullets to miss with.

I'm so sorry to hear what happened to your Grandpa... theiving s***bags!! What has the world come to when the people who should be most respected in our communities, are terrorized, bullied and otherwise disrespected.
Let him know that we are all very upset that this has happened to him, and he's got a lot of people thinking bout him.

I'm not a big gun person, despite coming from a redneck background...but ya gotta do, whatcha gotta do.

Personally, I vote for that big bad*** rotty.... I'll pitch in!

Thanks guys. He's financially sound and I appreciate the thoughts. I am not sure if he is ready to handle a dog, he pretty fraile.

  14. I don't usually respond to off-topic posts, but this really got to me. Make sure you are out of town with a lot of witnesses around when this hemorrhoid gets out, you never know what might happen to him, they may think you did it. Just have somebody let him know you have no hard feelings.

  15. Gun may not be a good idea if he can't keep someone from taking it from him, may turn a robbery into something worse.

S*** like them guys need to be skinned alive. I worry about my wife and baby sometimes when I'm not here. They know to keep the doors locked and call the cops.

Damn Root, glad he is ok.

  19. First thing one of my good friends told me when I moved here 23 years ago - make sure your neighbours know you are crazy.

    They do.

But I am still heavily against gun violence. If you shoot someone in your house, OK, you protected your family. Now where did that bullet get off to??? Is it lodged in your neighbours brain??
I don't wanna think about that.

THIS, this I know where it is - into and well through your body, then into the wall, to hold you where the cops can find you. If you survive, I guarantee you will recall this little incident when next you think of breaking and entering.
In case you're wondering: behind my bedroom door, and, yes, I can shave with it. Oh, yeah, you have all your arms because I can only thrust inside a house.

And you will NEVER hear the hammer click...

I just got off the phone with my mom and she said that he has told my dad to quit babysitting him and that he didn't want a gun or a dog or even an alarm.

He said that he wasn't worried and if they felt the need to shoot a 95 y/o man, then his time was up and he could go and be with grandma.
He said it wasn't his place to take another mans life.

He's one of the few left from the great generation.

The sound of a pump shotgun getting ****ed is a great deterrent, so is a warning shot through the head, and the shots generally don't travel to your neighbors house.

  25. Can you live with "generally"??

    I can't.

  26. Shotguns are very safe for home protection, they don't overpenetrate and end up in a neighbor's house like pistols sometimes do.

My point (and shoot) exactly. And if you have ever been anywhere and heard that slide and click, It's unmistakable and will turn many a thief around and send them scampering back to their crackhole, and you will probably not have to fire it.
I heard that sound while in the middle of a burrito, made the hair on my neck stand up, then the Feds came out of everywhere to surround some poor shlubs working on a radiator...turns out it was a case of mistaken iden***y and they were released. The sound had me movin' out of range quick though!...and I took my burrito with me.

Years ago I got a call at work from my mother who said she could hear a couple people breaking in to the house upstairs. Her bedroom was in the ba*****t. I told her to grab the shotgun from my room and hide in the closet. I called the cops, called my boss to explain the emergency and cover my patrol and I hopped in the car and hauled *** for home. I worked about 60 miles from town at the time.

I get to the house and the back screen door is laying on the gr***. (****!)
Pulled the pistol out, took cover and called out for my mom.
She calls back to come on in. (Relief)
I go in and find my mom sitting at the kitchen table with the 870 pump sitting on the table and a fresh pot of coffee on.

She tells me what happened. I guess they were upstairs rummaging around for a few minutes after breaking the kitchen window to get in. then when she heard them comming down the ba*****t stairs, she flipped on the light, racked the shotgun and said in a loud voice... "One Thousand and one... One thousand and two..."
She never got to "One thousand and three" before they broke the back door off getting out of there.

About this time the "City's Finest" show up with lights and sirens running to make sure there were no surprised badguys when they got there...

We do the the old bull horn "Come out with your hands up, turn around, walk backwards into the street." routine to make sure WE weren't the badguys. (Can't be too careful you know.)

60 damned miles from home and I got there first!!!
I do not rely on the police to save my *** or my family...

  29. Yeah the shotgun is a great tool. Pistol is to, if you know how to remain calm and use it. That being said; we just had an older guy here that thought, thought I say, heard someone trying to get in his back door. He said the door "rattled". He unloaded a 9mm and a .38 into the door. After that, then he called the police. Sometimes maybe having a gun is not all that great.
