I' working on piece a 1931 chevy coupe togther, i was wondering to get and i dea from everyone here on what set up would be best! I'd like to know the difference between the two! Thanks
1931 Chevy has (2) parallel leaf springs. Are you talking about changing it to a Ford style (single) cross leaf spring? You;re going to have to better define your question, unless someone's in the mood to write a book chapter here.
I used 31 chevy rails for my 27 T. I've always liked the look of the front wheels ahead of the radiator and was also able to use a stock A axle and still get it low in the front by using a suicide perch. If I were to do it agin I probably would go with a conventional crossmember and dropped axle. A suicide perch lengthens the wheelbase and turning radius suffers. Trying to turn and fit in tight places(like around a trailer, other vehicles and into my palatial 1 car garage ) can be a pita at times. Other than that, I don't think one is any better than the other. Just IMHO.
Do a search on suicide front ends. It's been covered a lot. Look at all the pictures you can. It comes down to what look you like. Both have advantages. Personally I like a suicide front, drilled with the spring under the grille shell, and attached to the bones.
I appreciate your guy's info!!! I'll do more research, i want the car to handle ok, so that my girlfriend can drive it as well!!!
My chassis is 3" off the ground. Here are some pictures of the chassis I built and the suicide front end style suspension.
