motor gurus and squirrel..i have a problem..i had a new intake gasket put on my car because it was ****ing air. also i wanted the guy to ajust the lifters..cause the motor set up for 33 years..anyway the guy took the lifters out to check them.. and forgot where they went back..so the old ones were mushroomed pretty bad..(so that explained the lifter noise)..anyway they put new lfters in and ajusted them..now the car is not running the way it was prior to them working on it..loss of power, has a slapping ,rapping noise coming from tail pipes..at idle and reving the motor..and it is running rich..also while driving at regular speed ..then pressing the gas (either slightly or hammering it to the floor it damn near kills the motor..then it will catch up and take off..keep in mind befor the work was done the car ran decent but it spuddered when accelerating..which i thought it was the intake leaking..and the lifters were claccking a little@ idle..other than that it was very fast and strong ..now not so much...any ideas on what went wrong?..the guys that did the work said i could have a burnt valve..i dont think so..but im not machanic..

If the lifter's were worn that bad, the cam itself is probably not much better. It might be a good idea to install a new cam , with new lifter's again.
Then you'd be starting out with new stuff and they will properly break in. I have a feeling the lifter's that were just installed won't last too long if that cam's bad. this may not solve your problem completly, but i think it might save you grief later on.
Plus the worn cam could add to the poor running issue's, and they might not have the lifter's adjusted right either..might be too tight..

Sounds to me like the guy who adjusted your valves after putting in the new lifters over tightened them causing the cam lobes to wear round. I'd have to be there and listen to it, but from what you explain, sounds like the cam is beat now. I've had enough SBC's with bad cams with the same symptoms. I could be wrong though. The way to check is to run the motor with the valve covers off and see how the rockers are going up and down ( makes a mess but works).Good luck...

check to see if all the valves are moving as much as they should, if so do a compression test.

i was thinkin the same about the cam being in just as bad shape as the old lifters..but they said the cam wasnt hurt..cant see how they wouldnt be after seeing the old lifters..the first 3 on the driver side was really worn in the middle and the rest of them were worn but not as bad and then there were several that looked lik they were scorched and flat..so wouldnt the cam be just as bad ?

if it has a burned valve compression will be low in that hole, and usually it will miss at idle, and likely foul the plug quickly. And cause a kind of hissing puffing sound at the tailpipe when that hole fires.

compression test will tell you right away if there's a burnt valve

also might be a good idea to tear down the whole engine because those metal particles that were ground off the cam and lifters have to go somewhere, sometimes they get embedded in piston skirts and tear up the bores, somethimes they get into the bearings and cause problems.

rebuild it. now or later, its going to need it. if the cam / lifters were that worn, the timing chain has to be stretched
