Things you find in the woods riding mountianbike...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tman, Sep 14, 2003.

  1. Headed out this afternoon to take a quick spin on my new Surly 29er. Perfect fall day, we rode a trail I will call the Bone Crusher. Came to a rock drop off and I spied some sheetmetal I had seen 20 times before. Now I am thinking cars this time and realize it is a left rear 1/4 panel for a 49/50 Merc!!!! Paint is still on it with a couple bullet holes. There was also a mangled bumper (same car?) with two VERY NICE bumper guards.

What I want to know is who and why put this car part 200 yards off a tiny secondary road? It was unbolted, was it drug out there for target practice?

All in all a very profitable ride.

Cool find. Makes me wonder, what ever happened to that '36 coupe those guys from Cali dug (literally) out of that ravine?

    Anyone know?

Harrison- One of us got a bad case of poison oak. Glad it wasn't me.
We're waiting for the leaves to drop before we go back for the rest.

    my thoughts exactly harrison...

tman - me and some friends driving a cordova off a cliff back home. drunk, bored with a $100 piece of junk... who knows, 30 yrs from now someone will be climbing around the beach and spy some vintage cordova tin in the crev***es [IMG]

not bad for a trek on the bike, good motivation to get out and ride around the boonies eh?

  5. Cordobas inspire that type of behavior, we tried to abandon one, after lighting it afire about 200 yards from a dirt road. Beer was involved in the decision to do this.

Surprising as it might seem, fine corinthian leather isn't as flammable as you might think.

when I was deer hunting 2 years ago I went through an old grove of trees and found TWO 49 mercs and a 53 merc, and a 51 ford pickup. One of the 49's was a 2 door, but it had a large cottonwood tree laying across the roof and trunk. The other was a 4 door and in tough tough shape. Still a neat find. Im still waiting for the day I find the Mysterion in an abandoned shed or something lol.......................................Briggs

There are a few cars right next to the mountain bike trail by my house. A 52 desoto the is mostly stripped and another early 30's car that is half burried in sand. There use to be more down the hill but the loggers got to them and crushed them there is still a couple left I think. Most were stollen and then abandoned up in the mountain. Both of the cars are within 20 feet of the trail and you won't see them unless you know there there. Shawn

T, who knows WHY they did what they did back then, guess it never occurred to people that stuff would be worth something more some day. Then again, how many things do you thro away right now just because it's easier to replace than repair ****ty dinged or "too far gone" by todays standards? Not just car parts, think of alla the things that have become collectable that a guy can find laying around where people just threw them some years ago! I first got the bug to 'keep an eye out' at about 12 when I found a few old tinplate toys laying in and near an abandoned house. My grampa went Nutz! Just enjoy the profit of having found and realized the value of what you have, whether you sell it or not. And Shawn, old tin don't lay where you think it will forever. Grab what you can of that '30's thing'. It's surprising what little space they'll dis***emble into!
