Ok here is the deal I have always thought just because you can dosen't mean you should. I don't think more fins are better than less fins. It's the execution. So in thinking 60's custom more is some how better.
Were building this 56 Ford pick up it's prety over the top. Quad head lights,61 Chrysler grill, choped, extra cab,and big back window. Then we got to the bed.A stock repop bed all square and plain.
So I have a 57 Ranchero at the shop and we start looking at the tailgate and tail lights. It looks like it will work great. So I get a donner car we cut the back off and start fitting the peaces to gether. First we get the tail gate in. Then I start on the roll pan. As Ben starts on t******* the quarters down to fit on the fenders.
That's where we stand the fender extentions are clecoed on and we are going back and forth. If the truck would look better with the Ranchero fenders. Or skip the fenders and run some merc tail lights and call it good.
    Thanks Scott

Wow, some great work done-except Ranchero tail lights. Go with frenched in Mercs or tunneled '59 Caddy. Use louvered tailgate . You must be having fun!!

  4. I don't like it with the stock bed rails. It looks like the fin should be where the bed rails are. I'd rethink it if I were you

Really nice, I like the pontoon style Ranchero lights, they seem to fit the round nature of the truck.

  6. Those rear fenders look good to me.

I'm not so sure bout the double cabin though... but you won't be changing that bit of the car now :D i guess

what paint job are you planning on ?

    I agree. I dig the front end - a LOT! - but I can't believe you did that to a big-window cab. :p

Purple and black panel job.white interor,Radir wheels. The truck was all ready a extra cab when I started it. But this will be my customers daily driver so the extra cab works out great for him.

Loose the '57 Ford taillights...too out of place on the fenders and next to the bed...if you are going to incorporate (mold...) taillights in it, make them fit into the bedrails somehow...

I have always been a believer of big tail lights to be seen. That said I really don't care for the way they fit the rear end of the truck. Maybe if you were to move the fins and tail lights up to the top of the bed rails or something but to me it just doesn't look right.

    that is slicker than ****!!!

  14. I think tinbender has it right. I think the 'chero tail lights would blend better if you "copy" the fin of the tails and move it to the bed rails. You might think about bobbing the bottoms of the rear fenders a bit too. Something is off in the proportions.

I think it's kick ***. I've got a 1960 Ford Crewcab staring me in the face in my garage and I just can't quite figure out what to do with it. I dig yours.

I love the Ranchero tailgate but I'm not feelin' the lights. Seems like the little thin taillight spears from a 60ish Caddy would fit right onto the tips of the bedrails and would look like factory there. Everything else I like, but I'm not feelin' the taillights.

dig the front end. the extra cab kinda ruins the 60's vibe for me. I like the slanted tailgate. not sure how to best incorp the bed rails

I like the tail light idea... but I think it would look better if you used as little of the surrounding ranchero sheetmetal as you can.

also another thing I like to see on a truck like that is to pull in the bottom of the front fenders to match the angle of the grille.

    good stuff.

  20. The front end has all of it's details low in the bodywork, the rear should echo that, I like the ranchero tailgate, and the bed sides, it IS a truck, after all. How about mount the taillights rotated 90 degrees with the fin horizontal to the outside and lower. Or 45 degrees ala 61 Olds.

Maybe something low on the fenders, '58 Belair/53 Buick taillights in each end. maybe even canted at each end.

I too think the "pod look" on the tail lights is out of place. They look too big, but I like the idea of using the bed rails to bring some lights out of. Maybe a smaller version up high, like (I think) 60 -61 pontiac or olds? I'm not sure of the year or make. Anyway, it is a compliment to be asked for our opinion by some one who can do that level of work.

what I was thinking if I decide to go with the ranchero tail lights I would trim down the bed rails to the same shape and angle as the fin off the tail light. But are talking about shaving off the whole bed rail? Scott

just put one 57 ford taillight right in the middle of the tailgate, lol, just kidding. I would definitly get rid of the bed rails if you keep the taillights

We did play around with the tail lights at differnt angles and looked at the 61 olds idea. But it seemed that this fit the best. But the light and fin just might be to big to flip it. Plus continuing the fin in front of the wheel opening would be the next question. I think the low fin works on cars with skirts that help continue the line.

It's your build, it looks great, it acknowledges the past and incorporates some ideas for the future -- which point of "BUILD IT!!"" intimidates you?

The point of style. I wanted to see if people thought the tail lights were to much. I am on the fence. It's is to the point of if I want to do this because I can or if it realy adds to the truck. There can be to much cheese on a cheese burger. I don't want to cross that line. Scott
