Another what did you get done this weekend??

Got the patch for my crusty wheel-well opening fitted and tacked in. This was a tough patch 'cause I couldn't get the dolly into some of the places where I needed to hammer my welds. I did have some help from a friend getting the patch and the quarter lined up for each tack. Turned out pretty good...now I just gotta stich-weld the spots in between the tacks and keep the heat down.

I'm not sure about everyone else, but I like to see what's going on with other people's projects...so, let's hear about what you did

it sucks when you can't get behind the panel. what i have done is borrow (or you can sometimes rent) a spot weld stud gun and a slide hammer. where ever your seems are low you can use the gun to weld a stud to the metal and then use the slide hammer to bring it closer to where it needs to be. you won't get it perfect but in can mean the difference between a nice thin swipe of filler and a quarter inch of filler.

what i did on my skirt tonight was to hold my air gun in my left hand and the welder gun in my right. i would put a tack on and wait ALMOST 1 whole second and then i'd blast air on it for about 5 to 10 seconds to keep the surrounding metal cool. if you blast air on it immediately, while the weld is still somewhat molten, you will blow part of the weld away and make a mess.
i welded the entire skirt (other than the bottom edge that i still have to finish) that way in a reasonably short amount of time, concidering how much weld there is around that thing. the metal was'nt even remotely warm to the touch when i blasted air on it a few seconds after EVERY spot weld.
i think my carpul tunnel is acting up now from all the gripping though. no joke! but thats an old injury from workin in the factory. you should be just fine unless you have a "pre-existing condition" like me ...

Luckily for me I read your tech on mig welding panels as well as Tinbender's on using an o/a torch (even though I don't have one, there are still useful techniques such as rounding the corners of the patch). I did the same thing...cooling my welds with air after a second or so. I contemplated tacking somthing to the patch to use as a handle for alignment, but I was able to tack in such an order that the patch sort of aligned itself (not that I didn't have to cut one off and re-do it ).

So, a late thanks for the tech article that's in the archives.

Great weather here this past weekend..tookthe pickup out for a drive and blew out the tranny. Towed it home and proceded to tear her apart for the newly rebuilt 39 tranny from Mac VP. Plans are to finish the body work this year, install a finished wood flloor bed and finish the cowl vent work and some interior work.

 

Helped a friend with his project Saturday - How can you practically build a car in a week and then take nearly a full day just to hang the deck lid? LOL.

Got the rear window panel tacked in place on the coupe yesterday before the wife dragged me away to 'shop' with her.

 

Finally got a new starter and installed it. Installed my new fuel tank too.

Now I'm trying to track down an old glass-bowl fuel filter so I anc plumb the dual carbs. Any one know where I can find a g-b filter like what was used on the late 50's to early 60's Chevies? My local NAPA style parts store can't find one.

jackhammered and removed 4 tons of concrete from my house. i'm tired.

 

I spent half of Saturday restoring my recently acquired Mallory Magspark YC. It's spent the last two weeks soaking (it looked like it had spent some time underwater; the auctioneer said they found it in the basement). I got it apart without destroying anything, cleaned up, installed a new gear, new springs, and cut the extension off. I'm just waiting on the new points and condenser from Summit. Those'll put my total investment at about $40.

I spent the rest of the day working on an S10 frame for the International.

found and bought this for fifty bucks, its some year of morris minor, and yes i know its bloody ugly, but it shoud be good for something.....not actually sure, for what- yet, still thing about it

 

I pressed some pistons on backwards, then I cooked some electronics, then I dropped a cam. I decided to spend the rest of the weekend watching TV before I ruin anything else.

Did some work on the exhaust system this past week, then it turned cold and I went in the house. The exhaust has been scraping the ground for some time so I gotta fix it. Started cutting it up at the elbows and twisting it in new directions. So far I have the left side tacked together and am working on the right. I need to put a "dent" in the right pipe for steering clearence. I thought I had it going my way then I took another look. Oh well nothing a little weld can't fix.

My son-in-law came by and we put a new slave cylinder on his Hon ah car. Says he wants to learn more about cars and offered to help me on the '57.

 

Finally got the headlights in on the Plymouth. It's got eyes now.

 

Worked like the devil to get my '49 Fleetline running.
No fire to the plugs but juice going into the distributor.
Replaced cap, rotor, coil and module (HEI).
guess what?
Still not running.
This car and I have never got along...
Look for it soon in the classifieds...
Oh and my wife backed into it to boot.
Minor dent, but and dent just the same.

I worked on the "new" rear end for my '47 truck. Did a quickie "rebuild" on my 9" - new pinion bearings - reset the backlash - made a pinion tool so I could actually torque the pinion nut to spec. Installed the 3rd memeber and finally test fit my newly resplined axle. It really hurt to yank the banjo, but now I can finally put my foot in it without waiting for the sound of gear teeth getting ripped off. Well - I guess I first need to rig up a driveshaft

 

I went to the Mooneyes Xmas show on Saturday, then I went to the Cycle World's international mototrcycle show at the Long Beach convention center on Sunday. Got no work done on anything. Some time's you need a weekend to enjoy yourself.

Got the gas tank installed and finished re-mounting the fuse block. Got a nice and sunny day in the 40's on sunday so I went out for a ride to try out the tonneau and tires. Tonneau works ok, flaps a little, might add a bow to it. One snap poped going on the expressway 75+ though, stopping the flapping will probably cure that. Need to work on it some more. Tires are a little harder then the others i had, they make it a rougher ride. The harder rubber makes them break loose easy even though its a 2.79 open rear with 30" tires. Stereing geometry changed from the rake the tires gave. Steering is alot more responsive. Time to work on it more, cold days moving back in.

 

New side glass and window felt 25% installed.

 

Mounted the power steering pump on my 38 chevy coupe, found out the Heidts hose chevy pump to Must II hose kit does NOT have all the fittings you could ever need. Cussed, went to the local parts house to see what they had, cussed some more. Got out the new 59 caddy tail lights and held up the the rear of the coupe to see what it is going to take to tunnel them in to the side of the trunk, scratched and cussed some more. Went in and mixed some Taquilla and orange juice and watched The Worlds Fastest Motorcycle on Speed.

 

Me and my father took the Impala to northern Finland on the new owner. The sun didn´t rise more than this during the whole day, it was noon when I took photos.

 

Crossmember work and front axle/spindles hung on.........
