Had a look under a split window bus the other day, has anyone run one of these as a side steer box?
they look like theyll bolt to top of the rail neatly, does the pitman arm then face up or down?its a little confusing to mentally spin it all around and work that out!
wondering too if the column would be the right kinda length in a 31 A, my cab is set back 3" or so.
would like to run the VW steering wheel too, kinda looks like a '40 ford one.but a heap cheaper.
So has anyone out there used one?or have any advice on these?

  2. im building a t bucket for a guy and it is running a shortened bug box. we built a brackett off the bottom of the frame and hung it dowm so the arm will be in the up position.

Hey man, I believe that the late Tom McMullen ran one on one of the versions of his black roadster. I have one sittin' in the garage so I did a little measuring. The column length from the box is 32"(not including the couple of inches of shaft that stick out of the column), the pitman arm is about 4-1/4"center to center and the pitman arm will have to point up in order for it to steer correctly. (unless your making it right hand drive). Hope that helps.

This reminds me of a funny little story... Yeah, yeah, you love this one... Once upon a time, well, we were puttin' together a little T Speedster. 27 Roadster body narrowed, blah, blah, blah, etc. One of us thought it appropriate to employ a VW Bug steering box. Made a nice bolt on bracket situation, even ground the box smooth and painted it all pretty to match whatever else was goin' on. Real nice but once the dust had settled and all was said and done . . . IT STEERED BACKWARDS!

I've heard that the Bus box is the one to use. The problem with that is Bus box's are big bucks and getting hard to get a hold of.If you have access to one cheap, don't hesitate on picking it up.
