I just traded for smalltownspeeds dodge truck and the axle I got is an old dodge truck axle with the stud bolts in stead of the usual ford/chevy's with wheel studs then lugnuts. My question is do they make any kind of conversion kit to make it have regular studs and lugnuts instead of the stud bolts? I'm just not real fond of the stud bolts that the old plymouth/dodge type stuff had. If not does anyone have a cheap chevy straight axle and springs out of the front of a 50-early55 chevy truck? that way I can go another route.
I'm also looking for a conversion kit so I can modify the brake system for a '26 chrysler. If you find one (because I have not and I've asked just about everyone), please email me at bossdj1st@sbcglobal.net
Don't know if the parts are still available, but I have had two different Mopars that have had screw in studs that you put lug nuts on. These were probably sold as individual parts. The lug bolts are 1/2" fine thread. Also, there are right and left hand threads on the lugs, the right hand threads probably wil be easier to find, the lefts will probably be a bear to find. Hope this helps some. Gene
I'd like to know more about the axle on my project. I found a source for cylinders and parts but I don't like the looks of the old setup. I don't mean to steal the thread but lets find out what is out there at all about these axles. My bolts are in sad shape which has led me to look for alternatives. Does anyone know if the spindles match any ford or other make that is out there that we could get new brake setups, disc or drum? Or how about swapping the spindles out. I can measure everything once I figure out how to get these damn kingpins out. There has to be someone here that has been through this already.
if your not going to use drums call the guys at ply-do for a disc conversion. i used to change out drum with left hand threads for ones with right hand threads(they were laying around 25 years ago). doorman used to make oversized 1/2" extra long studs that the guys used for racing, the extra length made up for the drum thickness. i reamed the hole just a little so drum wouldn't crack,my first attempt cracked. pressed in studs and had buddy put a little braze on them. i don't think we had any inside clearance issues but it's been 25 years since the last one i did. as to the kingpin issue, heat and a press!
