    What's up with companies today...

Just got the word that I won't be working at IBM after friday. They're 'right-sizing' the department. Coincidentally, that's the day my wife is scheduled for surgery...

Austin Job Market seems to **** for Technical Writers...

Anybody need a Technical Writer etc, in the Austin, San Antonio area?

I'm about ready to move back to SoCal so if anyone knows anything there as well, let me know.

To keep this less OT, maybe it's just time to start unloading Hot Rod ****... I haven't had the money/time to work on it for a while anyway...

    Ho, Ho, H... **** You! ;-)

If the ***le of your post didn't have the word "off" in it, I'd say congratulations. :)

    As it is, I'm sorry.

That does **** --big time !!
It's not a new thing to do tho, about 15 years ago when Premier Autoware ( an automotive Hardware supplier to car dealers --- nuts & bolts & stuff) was bought by an English electronic outfit, ALL the independent sales agents got a Telegram on Christmas Eve telling us we were fired--- they decided to go to telemarketing the products.
Premier Autoware folded up about 13 years ago!! Real smooth move you Limeys!!!

Hope something good turns up for you.

call Apple. they tend to not **** thier employees nearly as bad as the others.

worst case there is a linear move into another department.

  8. ****ty news and timing...Intel's pulling that **** over here too. At least your Tech Writing skills can cross fields if the IT industry is slumping...it sure seems like some automotive/hot rod vendors could use better writers for the manuals they include with their products.

    Good luck.

I got the boot last year about this time . . . it really ****s on timing. No time is a great time though, but in the middle of everything going to hell, it really makes things bad. Hope you find something out there - - Craigslist is handy for that too . . . advertise your skillset and resume that way.

  10. If you can, look at it as an extended holiday. It's very unlikely to find another permanent position until after the new year anyway, plus you can be there more to support your wife through and after her surgery. You may want to check out this easy-read book ***led "Who Moved My Cheese?".

I was laid off September 1st and I'm on an extended Labor Day weekend. I have unemployment insurance, so financially I'm doing fine. I'm doing some serious thinking, reflecting and such. I'll start seriously looking for what's next early next year.

I hear you on the car stuff, too.

    Thanks,
    Kurt

I got the axe at the company X-Mas party a few years back. No joke.

They let me go through all of the motions and carry on at the party, then when it was time to go that evening - and the free liquor quit flowing - he pulls me off to the side and cut my neck.

Ha ha ha ha ha, come to think of it - he even told me to have a Merry Christmas, lol. Almost a cliche moment there.

And he was laughing and joking all evening with everyone at the party like there was nothing wrong.

Told me that it came down to the bottom line. Not enough business and too many employees. No reflection on my work habits or anything at all.

Then he called me back during busy season the next summer - all nice and smoozy.

Course I am a good guy and I really DID need a job, so I went back to work for him. And believe me - I took high road the whole time, hoping to make him feel bad for what he did.

Not sure if it bothered him or not. After a year or so he sold the business to a new owner - who I got along with really well.

...I guess the point to all this is - don't burn any bridges, and you never know.

The corporate mindset should be illegal.

    Isn't big business swell?

I lost 2 jobs this year...the 1st with 25 years service. Been out of work 3 months, no one wants to hire a 54 year old supervisor, I guess...........

Sorry to hear this ****. I had a heart attack in June and went back to work in august and my boss is ****ing with me big time! The funny part is ive been with the company for 29 years november and he has about 4 years. He is also my cousin and the same age as me but the ****er talkes to me like he is my father. He has burned me quite a few times since ive been back and id like to beat his *** but he would have me in jail for that. Ive actually said **** it. If he needs to get me fired then go for it. I may need a change anyway but its hard for a 55 yr old to get a job. The trend now days is younger go getters but then i see younger guys that cant figure out if thier *** is punched or bored sooo????????????
Ok they ****ed you and now im fired up again. At least I dont need a nitro pill:D:D

Holy cow...this thread is amazing...I never knew the bomb could hit this often at this time of the year. That really ****s...I thought 'Big Blue' was lifetime employment - or at the worst a buy out.

Thanks for all the moral support, and all the leads, guys...

    It helps a lot.

It's going to be a long ****ing week but there's nothing I can do about it. I guess I'll just try to focus on taking advantage of my free time...

Good luck to all you other out of work guys too... This is the first christm*** since High School that I will be unemployed, so it's a bit wierd. But it always ****ed to have to rush back to work for the week between X-m*** and New Years... I guess that's a plus. ;)

    Happy Hollidays!

Kilroy, It might be worthless to know this if you're attached to Texas, but my mother has been doing technical writing in Seattle/Redmond for 20 years now. She did some independent contracting, worked for Microsoft, worked for Boeing, and now works for some other small business making bank. Point being, there is at least one place in the nation I know of that the economy hasn't totally **** the bed. If all else fails, you might try shopping your resume there.
Good luck, and Merry Christmas. Don't let this **** spoil the time you have with your family like I know I would.

  24. When one door closes another door opens - they say. However, it certainly ****s when your the guy caught up in it. Ross Perot (remember him?) he warned us all years ago that NAFTA was bad. Then the press and both political parties all jumped on him and made him out to be nuts. Time has shown he was right. Next, I think it is true that the top br*** in companies try to line their own pockets at the expense of the rank and file. I know were not supposed to wish for bad things to happen to those bad people - however - what goes around will someday come around to them!

This isn't really anything new. I've been fired or layed off around Christmas time at least two times and probably a third (it was so long ago).

Sign up for the unemployment, get some resume out and view this as it really is, just a temporary set back. This is a good time to revaluate if you want another job, or if there is something deep down inside that you have always wanted to do. Do some sole searching, this may be the oppertunity you really always was looking for!
Good luck with what ever way you go, between now and then, enjoy the time off. No one hires before after the first of the year anyway.

wow, that totally blows. i am pretty good friends with the purchasing manager at my company. he refuses to buy parts from chinese and indian sources unless he absolutely has to. whats his beef? reliability. sure they'll sell you stuff at 20 cents on the dollar, but when the plant in Rajpur blows up because it wasnt safe, or the parts get caught up in customs (this happens a LOT) its our company who is left holding the bag trying to explain to our customers why we cant deliver. ive seen it more than once with this outsourcing trend that we can get products dirt cheap, but as they say... you get what you pay for. i have a feeling that this whole thing will implode one day.
till then... good luck in your search. eye of the tiger! eye of the tiger!!

Last year my friend and a co-worker of his both got the boot, and then I got it the next day . . . after I already had sent him a great job offer that I told him I didn't need. Irony ****s doesn't it? (Oh yea . . . and he got that job that I had sent him.) Nothing like losing your job and then having your wife think your a worthless pile of sh*t at Christmas time . . . . tis the season. ;-)

Sorry to here about your job loss, sometimes things work out for the better. Hope you find a new better job soon.
As for NAFTA or SHAFTA or what ever its up to us as consumers. They can sign all the agreements they want, ship all the goods over here, but if we don't buy the foriegn **** it all ends and Americans will have more jobs. Think before you buy!
