How does the movie end? I think I got a botched copy......on mine, at the end, he is drag racing down an old air strip and that's how it goes off.....

There is a website dedicated to the surviving 55, but what about that little green 32 coupe? Where, who, what?

This movie starts out as THE BEST hot rod movie EVER.....it's focus seems to change as it goes on...more story and less racing......I guess that's why it's a movie and not a documentary about a day at the drag strip....

    haha, great flick!

  3. Ya thats how the movie ends...now Im the biggest car freak you can be, its all I think about 24hrs a day, that and girls...but I hate this movie. It sucks! The car is sick, and the few racing scenes are pretty damn cool, but plot? What plot? It starts out as a race across the country and that just dissapears...Idk, just my opinion ;)

The ending personifies the inability of youth to ..........................blah, blah, blah....

Its a cult classic.....the car is the star................that's all that matters.

That's the way it ends. It's left up to the viewer's imagination. I say he rolls it, then gives up racing for a short career as a singer-song writer. His mechanic dies in a boating accident.

Its a low buck car movie, it doesn't need a plot.
It could have done without the dirty hippie, in my opinion.

huh! somethin I actually know about!

The movie was intended to end that way-looking like you got stiffed for a "big hollywood ending" the director didn't want one, so his original thought was the "film got stuck in the projector" burned cell thing.

The guy with the little green coupe is the guy that built the 55.-and yes, it is the same car from "graffiti". as in the exact same car from "graffiti".

there are conflicting accounts of which film was "in the can" first-so the question is, did they dress it up for A.G, or dull it out for "Two Lane"- judging by the way the car appears in Two lane, I would assume the latter.

The car actually did some racing between movies, and I can't imagine REMOVING a fiberglass front end, decklid, and doors in favor of putting steel BACK on the car. especially not if you were supposed to have "the fastest car in the valley."

plot? what's the point? it's a CAR movie. you want plot, watch Shaving Ryans Privates. not THAT'S a plot. ( I should mention Ryan is a girl here...)

The car is still around, too. as is the coupe, but the last I heard is it underwent some rather hideous changes in the 80's and is now unrecognizable as the "two lane" car. No one really knows what happened to the Judge-but it in itself is rare as rocking horse poop, being a ram air IV standard shift car. problem is, it's "carousel red" (orange as a motherfucker orange if you ask me) and they painted about half the fleet of judges that color, as best as I can tell.

    my question is this.
How the heck did that guy eat all those hard boiled eggs in the back of his car that had been there for who knows how long and not get the blistering shits? I mean really? they got a shelf life of around 15 minutes as best as I can tell, and he is wolfing them down in like 3 scenes! did the girl get out of the car cause he had really bad gas from the eggs? There, my friends is the plot. HOW DID THE JUDGE NOT SHIT HIMSELF?????

Try evil pay again. I think they re-released this on DVD cause there were several listings for dvds in the 20 bux range.

I got it on vhs at wally world a few years ago for about $10

It was a bad movie in the late 70s when I first saw it on tv real late at night.

    It's still a bad movie.

who cares? the cars make up for it

  19. side note on the hippy chick. Seems she saw the final cut of the movie, saw her shitty acting, and commited suicide. Probably couldn't take hearing "Gotta change the jets" one more time.

also on a side note, there's a tribute record for the movie called "You can never go fast enough" A friend got me the record as a gift, and that inspired me to seek out the movie. It's a cool record, a compilation with Calexico, Wilco, Sonic Youth, and others. Plain recordings out of San Francisco

movie came out in 71, she killed herself in 79....I guess it took her a while to see how bad it was?

  22. you saw the acting? What do you think?

  23. with very few car movies (with the car as the star) it was good. but the rest need to be on dvd too. hmmm i didn't know it went out of print again....i have it on dvd (the revamped version with dolby digital 5.1 sound and clean picture). my girl got me the collector set for my birthday one year it has the tin cover, a book, the dvd and a '55 chevy keychain :).

The judge in the movie was a 70 and it was Orbit Orange. The 69 Judges were carousel red but your right Orbit Orange is bright as hell.

It was just a wierd nihilistic arthouse 70's movie that happened to have cars in it. Even "More American Graffiti" was weird, and that was in '79. Anyone ever seen "Xanadu"? That was in '80, and it was a friggin acid trip gone wrong. That whole decade was full of wierd-assed movies.

I actually read the book that came out soon after the flick (I was too young to see the movie), which was basically the script with some notes and explanations.
The idea for this existentialist film was that they would just drive across the middle of the country, and write the day's lines as a reaction to the local flavor and the director's whims.
Finally saw the movie years later at a drive-in, and it was pretty bad except for the cars. Can't believe Warren Oates actually signed up for a movie with no script, 2 rock stars with no acting experience (before or after), and an unknown actress.

I read in a article about the 55 that it was a very nice painted car(powder blue/white?) and the producers had it primered because everyone knows hot rods are all primered...also read the crash car was used on stock car tracks after AG;a junker was burned.
    anyone else remember this article?

  28. Two Lane Blacktop was directed by Monte Hellman. Laurie bird was in another movie he directed, and Warren Oates starred in; Cockfighter, 1974. She went on to play Paul Simon's girlfriend in Annie Hall; interestingly, she was living with Simon's former musical collaborator Art Garfunkel when she committed suicide.

She (Laurie Bird) probably punched her own ticket when she realized she was shacked up with Art Garfunkel.
