ford toploaders (liberty upgraded) anyone use one on the street?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by rickyracer1962, Dec 11, 2006.

  1. i just picked up a top loader four speed with liberty gears (pro-shift), they rework them for drag racing, no synchos for 2,3, & 4 th gears. anyone have any experience with these? will it work on the street or is it too impractical?

I've ridden in a car that was street/strip (mostly strip) with a liberty toploader - I would never do that for a primaryily street-driven car. To clarify, pro-shift = crash box. The dogs are enlarged & skipped every so often.

If you don't have a use for a drag strip trans, I'd try to sell the trans to a racer & start hunting for a standard toploader...

    Just my opinion.

You won't have any synchonizers for downshifting, making it pretty much usless for the street. They take out the stock synchros and replace them with "dog rings". Great for power upshifts, almost impossible to downshift. I'd like to have one for a drag only car.

  4. Hey, I run a Doug Nash on the street thats pro shifted. Just shift it like you own it and you'll be fine. Its kinda of a comfort thing

  5. shift like i own it huh? rad. do you downshift yours, or just wait till your at a stop to downshift? looks bulletproof, i might try it just because.

I bought one in the late 80s for my Mach1;lived with it for about 6 months;down shifting was a bitch.
