I think you might have just summed up why people would possibly not be interested in an $84k shotgun shack in the woods. I live right outside NYC and yeah, its ridiculously expensive. My little split level on 45x100 lot, 1 car garage....figure $350-400k and over $6k property tax this year. But Id rather pay that than have some WT chick threatening a neighbor over a "half of a rusted out circle burner" whatever that is or a rotted out Suburban lying dormant on her property for two years. I'm sure it's no great mystery why your house came so cheap.

    No.

The guy who invented the device and got the politicians to make only his product the required by law device decided he didn't want to make them available any more so he got the politicians to stop requiring them...
    Talk about a racket!

Here's the catch with the "random" road test, We aren't required to routinely test cars built before 1976 BUT tht soesn't mean we can take smog equipment off the car. Sme guys have and do and if they get caught in this "program" they will have to open their hoods and show they are still "legal" or who knows what they will do with your big block '71 Challenger with no A.I.R. pump...
Maybe confiscate it and crush it on the spot?
They have the guns, they have the power...

ok, but how far back do the equipment laws go? I think CA required PCV in 1961, and there were federal laws covering emissions equipment on 1968 and newer cars.

As a geologist, rustyNYer nails it.

Remember that China (and most of the rest of the world) isn't doing shit relative to the US and all that crap is coming over the ocean. If the dust from dust storms can make it over the ocean, imagine what also can make it. Hell, in Beijing the other day, they warned people about pollution exposure by just going outside!!

dust and carbon dioxide levels are quite different things. The dust settles out after a while...the CO2 does not.

  7. California would be great if it wasn't in California! The weather is great, but the people and rules suck! the same could probably be said of New Yuck, but I've never been there, so I can't comment.

  8. I drive I-75 through Ohio several times a year. That answers the question why I wouldn't live in Ohio, no matter how cheap it is.If there is anything pretty there, it is imported.

Other than the mentioned retro-fit which is no longer required. CA law (so far) only requires cars to pass established Federal Smog laws which weren't put into effect until the '66 model years.
But they can still cite you for "smoking exhaust," and all that takes is ONE person turning in your tag to the Hitler Youth, er, I mean the Gestapo, damn, I cant remember,,, The DMV or BAR, and they send you a fix-it ticket.
A friend got one on his magazine-cover-car brand new engine custom '48 Ford truck a few years (decade?) back. He sent them copies of the reciepts for the new engine and convinced them it must have either been a jealous neighbor or someone mistaking morning exhaust condensation for smoke.

I just wonder how "tight" they are going to make their sniffer...
Current smog requirements for new cars are cleaner than the ambient air around here!

The Spaniards who invaded California centuries ago found that the local Native people called the Los Angeles Basin "The Valley of Smoke" because the horseshoe of mountains causes a natural ozone inversion layer that made it's own smog long before the occurance of cars, or even horses!
It's like some one up thread said, inventing busine$$ and keeping the little guy who really can't afford a new car down.

The people suck both in NYC and CA (people suck pretty much everywhere) but at least in CA you get nice weather and smooth roads. Here we have to deal with assholes, bad weather and the worst road conditions in the entire country. Awh NYC I love it and hate it equally in opposite directions…

I won't complain. I bought my little (1375 sq ft) tract home in So Cal in 1973 for $24K.....aside from a re-fi some years ago, it's almost paid off. I would love to sell this joint (market comp @ almost $500k), move to a cheaper area where I can build an awesome shop for our cars and just retire from the retail world..........but I can't. I'm spoiled rotten by the good weather, too close to my grandkids (my son bought the house next door) and I have alot of great friends in the area. I suppose I'll just have to stay here until they carry me out feet first.

I could go on for an hour on the smog program but I won't.........a 1935 Ford and a 1930 Model A is "exempt" anyway and besides......I'm doing my share, the flathead has a full-on pcv system.

California is just awful...don't visit, don't move here...stay in bumf**k wherever. I work at a University campus...college age girls everywhere, surfing, volleyball playin', healthy lookin' girls.
I did read about surfers in Cleveland though, dodging ice, and hypodermics in the brown lake to surf 10' waves in winter.
Shall I tell you what my view is today?
My 60 Cad is so far from their radar...I used to get pulled over in LA and the first question was, (after they had us out on the ground) , "Where's the gun?" Nowadays my gray head in a lowered Caddie just spells "Old Dude in an old car" to the cops. Cops don't even look at me anymore!
I lived in Oregon for 1yr, 4days, 17 hours and 22 minutes. I heard enough Cali bashing to last this Cali native a lifetime. So I repeat
    DON'T COME HERE!

No matter the excuse, having 18 wheelers on city streets is not what they were designed for. McDonalds and Taco Bell need to use delivery trucks, and not freight trucks, or pay us to repair our city roads every year.

When I used to live in Portland I would call in about 10 cars and trucks every day. Cell phones are neat, as you can snitch on your way back and forth to work. It really worked too. After a month or so I'd have to call in a different batch of polluters. I think it has to smoke for more than 10 seconds, and not be due to the car warming-up in winter. Here in Oklahoma no one gives a crap, but these people pile their garbage up to 3000 feet altitude and call it a land-fill.

I figure it is like someone taking a shit on your sandwich. I don't like it. If you can't afford maintenance, or don't know how to hold a screwdriver, then ride the bus.

    They aren't "looking" at all.
They have a machine that trips an infra-red scanner that reads the exhaust as the car passes the point and if it's "dirty" the camera automatically takes your picture and sends you a notice.
I would guess anything driving by the equipment that still has a carburetor will get a notice if they "crank it down" that tight.

The will probably put them on up-hill freeway on ramps right past the stop and wait traffic control signalstoo, so you will be in acceleration-rich mode when you pass too.
It's not a matter of whether your car is going to pass or not, it's still going to cost you TIME and probably money to clear the bullshit citation, and how many times are you going to be unlucky enough to drive past one?

Back in the late 60's the CHP had roadside safety checks.
They set them up AFTER rush hour so they only got people driving at non-regular work hours, housewives driving the second car, salesmen, pizza delivery people, usually poor students.
I worked at an Olds dealer on Pacific Coast Highway and they set up up the street some times.
They would stop cars at random, and first a guy would "check" the headlight aim with some hand held contraption that NEVER passed a car's headlights. They would fail brand new Oldsmobiles that had just been serviced, and back then we actually did aim the headlights during new-car-get-ready.
Of course the new car owner would come back in pissed as hell because the new car he'd just bought and only driven 1/2 a block failed a "test".
We just signed the fucking thing off and let him send it in because it was bullshit.
Lucky it was just a no-fine fix-it ticket.

    Its a game.
    You get cited.
You then have to get the car "fixed" at a licensed shop, that costs you money, every time you get "caught", not just annually or whatever.
Then the State gets their "cut" from the shop through the liscense fees...

Government = Biggest GANG in town

yeah, California sucks. Just keep shipping us all your hot 18 year old girls under 130 lbs with all their teeth who want to make it big in Hollywood.

The fucking CHP are a joke. They really need to be checking for People who dont have insurance or driving on fake or suspended licences, who seem to be aiding in the epidemic of hit and run accidents... Oh wait they dont have a computer to do all the work for their lazy asses like the sniffer does... plus they may have to speak something more than english to get the job done, so that's a big hassle for their overpaid asses too.

did I ever tell you the story about Dr. Stedman? the guy in Denver who invented that machine? fun stuff.

Your car has to be pretty far out of whack to set it off, if it does you really should thank them for letting you know how bad it is.

It gets better, as of Jan. 1, 07, all new gas lawnmowers, string trimmers, edgers etc. sold in CA will have to have catalytic converters. My current Craftsman is 20 years old. May have to go mower shopping soon.

They just pulled this crap up by me ... Backed cars up almost an hour .. They probably caused more smog with the back up than they caught ...

Pay all these fees and waist your time for smog checks and they still fuck with you for a few " Gross Polluters " .. an excuse to screw with anyone they want .. What could it be 1% or less of all the cars on the road ...

The Cal seems to have no problem letting them build more houses and "invite" more people into the state with out solving any commute / traffic problems ... Talk a real cause of pollution ...

It's all about the money !!! like its always been ...

    CHP- "AAA with a gun"...

Actually, that would have a greater impact on vehicle emissions if they just impounded each and every car driven by such violators--and deported said drivers.

I'm currently developing a Brillo Pad device, which is a semi-restrictive filter you insert in your tailpipe that converts the chemical makeup of the emitted fumes into orange blossom scent. Got the scent part down pat...just can't seem to find the right steel wool that has the ability to remove toxins!

Buggy springs nothing, I got IFS and radials in my shoebox and it still sucks. What i want to know is why we get the most federal money for highway improvement; but still have to make what should be a 10 minute drive in an hour on a shit-hole of a highway.

I think that you misunderstood the intent my post. I was simply comparing life here where the State doesn't go out of it's way to make things unbearable to California. Ohio would NOT be my first pick of states to move to and I'm not advocating anyone moving here. But all in all, it's not the worst state to live in either. Would I rather live here than near NYC or in California? Hell yes! I've been to both and was not impressed.

BTW, my home is FAR from being a 'shotgun shack'. It was built by the previous owner in '98, is on almost a half acre of land and is by far the nicest home I've owned. He and his wife wanted to remodel a large old home as a longterm project and sold me this place.I live in a nice, quiet working class neighborhood where most of the residents own their own homes. No violence, no drug dealing, no gangs, no serious crime.... Housing prices in NE Ohio are among the lowest in the country because there's not a ton of work here. My property taxes are $260 a half year and I pay only a percentage of that because I'm disabled. I brought up the zoning issues just to show how laid back most things are. Most of my neighbors, several of which own old cars stop by to check out any new 'find' that I bring home. All seem to think that having an old broad hot rodder who does her own work in their midst to a pretty cool thing.

Yeah, I park cars, my pickup and my trailer in my sideyard...AKA my parking lot. If that makes me a redneck..COOL! By the way, a 'circle burner' is an oval track race car.

Guys, I'm sorry that I took this subject so far OT. Ryan, Root or any other moderator, please delete this post if you think it's inappropriate to the topic.
