I just bout a 50 chevy club coupe. I want to do a frame swap of a later model car. What has worked well with this short wheel base car? Any ideas? Any info would be helpful!! Thanks steve
the best frame for a 50 chevy would be the frame it came with. with all the aftermarket stuff out there these days there is absolutely nothing to gain by changing it.
I would like to make it my daily. I dont have the cash to put in this rough car with aftermarket shit. the frame is bent in the front and i would rather skin it over something.. With 20,000 people on this board I would think someone has done it before.. anyhelp?
There's been a lot of talk about S-10 swaps here lately. That's an option or, maybe one of those guys is getting rid of an original frame? If all you need is the frame that's the route I'd go. If you're doing an engine swap or your suspension is shot, it might make more sense to do the whole chassis. Bryan
Friend of mine used like a 85 Monte carlo, stretched maybe 4-6 inchs. Used Monte floor/partial cowl also.
A few years ago we did a 51 fast back on a 86 monte, just as previous reply said had to strech about 7".we used floor pan and partial firewall, factory brakes bolted back in ,steering col,and monte front seat, lotta work but cheap. We used the 4.3 ing 6 with duals and glass packs sounded like an old split 6,if you do it a 4"channel is a little too much!!!!!!!!!!!!Dave
How do you use the floor pan and stretch the wheel base at the same time? Do you add a section to the floor pan to match the frame lengthening, or do you only use the front 1/2 of the monte floor pan?
i'm pretty sure your wheelbase is 115". the hub-to-hub width is right at 60". the 1st and 2nd generation Montes and Cutlass are a good donor. they have a 116" wheelbase. i've heard of many guys using these and stock floor, but i have never got a chance to check one out up close so i dont know what all is involved.
If it's sucha piece of shit, why the fuck would you spend the time it would take to do a frame swap? Why not consider a front clip then if just the front rails are bent. Otherwise, a long bed extended cab S-10 is going to be a good bet. The track witdths on a lot of the full size cars are a little too wide. and the wheel bases too short.
I have done the S10 swap on a 49 chevy, and its fits pretty good. The track width is the same on the front suspension at 60". The 2wd rear ends are too narrow at about 55" but the 4wd 59" rear end is a bolt in and fits real nice. If you want stock ride height, you can put the body over the frame and make new body mounts on the frame to go to the existing body mounts on the body. You have to do two cuts in the rear seat pan under the seat because how the frame kicks up. Other than that it is fine. If you want it low, you can then install one of the popular S10 drop kits, like a 4/5" drop. My car was real rusty, so i channelled it while I was at it and am sitting at about a 6" channel. Looks killer and I have completely stock suspension. I also think I have about $1200 into the entire car right now and its almost ready to move under its own power. I still need lots of body work and an interior though. If you are going to use an S10 frame, get a long bed standard cab with its 117.9" wheelbase, or the 122" extended cab. You will be shortening the frame anyways to a 115" wheelbase. There is a 50 chevy for sale on here still I think that is sitting on an S10 frame.
