I wanted to get the dash in color before i go any further on the body..it's a lot easier to tape up the dash to paint the car than the other way around.. beside's, i needed a break from body work. I started it monday, and finished wet sanding and hand rubbing it tonight. Still have to clean up some of the chrome before i put the rest back together.. The bottom color will also be the body color, although it's gonna be more of a satin than high gloss.. I'm so damn excited to actually see some progress on this thing! star photo is really slow right now, so i'm gonna attach a few pics of the dash, and one of the shifter assembly too in a few post's... so give me a minute to get 'em up. here's one. Rat...
That is bitchin! I'm probably going to be doing mine white on top with black on the bottom soon. Very nice. Derrick
Nice work man, the car is coming along really well. The 54 HT I had was the same colors on the dash only reversed. Looks good. Billy
Thanks guy's. I was torn on the final color..i wanted copper, so i ended up spending over an hour at my paint supply place looking at 'chips' til i found what i wanted.. The pics do the copper NO justice..it's really a wild color. Rat....
Yeah, i'm hooked bad!!! heh heh. Most of the interior is gonna be white. The bottom of the dash, column, shifter center of the wheel (59 Impala) piping on the seats and carpet are going copper..the rest will be white. Rat.......
the heater would look very nice in copper, pinstiped in white, along with the pedal "rods" going through the floor!
Man Thats really good looking! That gives me some much needed instiration after a bad day working on my 54.... Keep me posted please! -J.
Great looking dash and parts-pieces "PakRat". I missed the rest of the biuld up on your "53". How much did you whack out of the windshield posts. I'm going to be doing mine in the near future and that looks perfect!
Thanks again guy's. Yo Tuck, i think youd be proud cuzz..you should fly out and check it out in person!! Hip, i took 5" out of the top. Here's a pic of the roof once i finished the body work on it. I'll post more progress pics as i go along. Rat....
That looks fantastic...what'd you use to get it shiny? I spent a TON of time wet-sanding mine with 1500 grit until it was as smooth as possible, then used 3M rubbing compound, and it's "kinda" shiny but nowhere near like what you've got. Is there a final step I'm missing?
Machinos, I did basically the same thing you did. Wet sanded with 1500 til it was smooth as glass, then used 3M Perfectit 2 for compound, by hand, and once i had it all rubbed i went over it with 3M Imperial hand glaze. I buffed my ass off, my arms are still hurting. I'm not sure what you used as far as paint, but i used ICI base, clear. I've had a lot of luck getting a killer shine from ICI paints. Rat....
I just used Rustoleum from a spray can The only book I've got that talks about painting in detail mostly covers lacquer, is it possible to get a real shiny finish from enamel without clearcoat?
Lookin good Tony! I guess the weather is getting nicer up there as well. tried callin a couple of times. Youre NEVER home... Spike
I'm not really sure. I know from my past experience with rattle can paints, i have rarely been able to achieve the shine like if you were to use a base clear, or a single stage paint. I'm no painter, i've learned what i know from a friend who is one, and trial and error..and more error. I wonder if you rattle canned some clear on it, then go through the sand and buff stages again if it would have more shine to it. Spike, the weather has been pretty good, but it's getting cold again. I did get your message, and like ussual i havn't returned the call. Sorry man!! You gonna be around tomorrow? I'll call ya if you are.. lemme know. We DO need to catch up on shit ya know.... Rat....
Tony, I have experience with rattle can clear.. If you do go through the same process it will make a little differece, but for what the finish product is,, its a waste of time.... steve-
Sport, i did a tech post on it during the first tech week.. it was something like "my attempt at tech, stovebolt chevy chop" It's got a bunch of pics on it in that thread. If you do a search, you should find it. I don't wanna keep posting the pics of it til i make some more progress.. I don't think everyone want's to keep seeing pics of it. Thanks a lot on the compliment though!! Steve, thats one of the reasons i learned how to paint with automotive paints rather than cans all the time...i'd spend more time trying to make rattle can look right than i would if i just shot it with a gun. Tony.......
Tony ,the dash looks GREAT!!! The colors arec perfect, at least in my opinion. I just wish that I had half of your energy, but seeing as I am nearly twice as old as you maybe it's a good thing I don't! Which brings me to a tardy birthday wish to you. We were in Mexico when the big event for you hit and couldn't respond as the internet connection wouldn't cooperate. Anyway Tony, a belated "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" to you!
Thanks John!! I wish i had half the energy i had!! Oh well, i'm heading back out in the garare now to get some more done... I want this thing in Syracuse!! Tony...
