I have a Mallory YL580HP distributor and I have no idea what it fits. I Have looked online and thru a couple of older catalogs, but no luck as of yet. Does anyone know of a website that lists part numbers, or know what it fits? tia

According to my original catalog, all the YL series are for marine engines. No 580 listed though.

I have that same part number Mallory in my Pontiac 389. I got the same response as far as no listing for the 580.... Mine runs great, I'm just debating installing some pertronix in there. I won't put H.E.I or anything like that on for the reason that my car is a period perfect gasser..... However I'm open to some opions about whether or not I should put pertronix, or leave the points.....

Heathen is the Mallory guru. I'll try looking in my stuff...some marine applications use a different base number than the car engine they are based on! I just found that section of weird stuff way in the back of a catalog when a friend found an odd numbered one converted to late flathead.

A buddy of mine converted mine to Chrysler electronic ign. I'm very happy with it. The mag. pick up needs to be lowered to clear the underside of the Mallory rotor button but that's no big thing.

Finally found a 580 listing in a late catalog. Listed as 1963-80 Pontiac, all the variants from 307-455. Someone at Mallory enjoyed continually changing not just part numbers but the whole blasted scheme...
Some other Pontiac distributors got a 312 root number. Same applications.
This was in the main automotive section. For really odd numbers, always check the marine list, as marine variants for particular manufacturers often got completely different basic numbers than the car version. Also, some of the marine stuff was available for reverse rotation engines, neat stuff that would give you some interesting times trying to tune...

Thanks for the kind words. Although the listing may say '63-'80, it'll fit all Pontiacs from '55 right to the bitter end. I don't know why Mallory saw fit to start changing part numbers on distributor applications that had been around for 20-30 years--small block Chevy was 310 for years, then suddenly went to 482.
