so i got a buick 300 and i wanna make some power.it's gone in a 26-T ,so it ain't gonna take much.don't know anything about um.been to buickv8.com and learned a little.anything else or anybodys experences would help out.
I think there is a one year only aluminum headed version. Not sure if any 4 B manifolds were offered. It's pretty obsolete now a days. so Unless it is running alright now it might end up a money pit for maybe 250 HP max.
an 300 buick is NOT an nailhead check out places that sell rover stuff and check out dmarv's posts here for offenhauser stuff i belive offenhauser makes valvecovers and intakes still for the rover/olds/buick 215 series, and please stop calling it an nailhead only nailheads are 322,364,401,425 buicks engines
Good motor, but it ain't a nailhead. Here's my advise: Go back to the Buick site and find Sean Etson. He has a mid 60's 300 powered Special or LeSabre or something that runs in the 12's. When it comes to these motors he's "the guy". Good luck.
wasn't the 264 just an starter engine for 425 nailheads with superchargers? yeah doh of course i forgot bout the 264.
LOL , yeah, somethin like that... i think Ivo used a 264 for a starter on his bored out Nailheads in his multi engine dragsters.
nope http://www.roversd1.nl/sd1web/capacity3.html if it matches these its not an nailhead check that page out seems like an good page to check didn't roth use an 215 buick engine in one car once? the valve covers angle on the 215-300 just to look like an nailhead a little.. http://www.buickstreet.com/build-a-better-buick-nailhead-page1.html if you somehow had an 322 nailhead this page could be nice to check out.. eitherway incase your unsure on what you have these pages should make you notice real quick what it is hope you didnt pay nailhead money for that 300 how much did you pay for it?
See there you go thinking again... But sorry to dissapoint but if the distributor is in the front it's not... 264, 322, 364, 401, 425... It's easy enough to grasp... and another thing.. Every Buick is not a Buford..
i got it for 20 bucks complete with p.s. pump, trans, everything.don't know if it runs, but it turns.i work at a junkyard and the car,63'wildcat,was goin to the crush.so i cut it out and paid s**** for it.i'tve always been more of a ford guy.just thought it might be cool to use for the T i'm buildin.got a couple flatties, but i thought the buick motor might be good to use.more power and cheaper, but who knows.i've got a 322 as well, but thats gonna be built for the 53'buick in my shop.
If I knew where Jugtown Mountain was I might be interested... I have a friend that needs an inexpensive motor for a car he's building... I guess this is where the doing an intro and filling out your profile (correctly) would help... I've said it once I'll sat it again... no intro, no love...
They're a pretty useful engine, really. The 340 version powered a lot of GS cars and they're almost the same-the block deck is higher. Buick did make an aluminum 4 barrel manifold for the 300's and they seem to be available (340/300 intakes DO NOT interchange). The engine is 2" shorter than a SBC and lighter, esp. with the 64-only aluminum heads. They have the late BOP bell housing pattern and a front distributor, so it fits in a model A pretty well. I don't know of any multi-carb intakes for them though, so I'm thinking of making one for mine.
hey z man, take it easy, huh.i don't need to catch an at***ude over this.i joined about three days ago so i could find info on a 322 to 700 with a ten bolt.then i threw out a couple more questions.i'll figure this site out later.i don't use computers to often,so i ain't so quick on here.i'll figure it out.i'm in jersey by the way.
When you joined you should have seen... Read this First If you would have explained how things work... and hey that reading thing, it's fundamental...
If it really came out of a '63 Wildcat, someone cobbed it in there after the fact--the engine came out in '64. Does it have aluminum heads?
I think I have a 4V factory aluminum intake for that engine stuck back in the garage. PM me if you need it. It'll be cheap. GV
This ones been in my 50 Chevy truck for over 20 years. If its the factory 4bbl version like mine its not happy w/anything less than premium fuel. (pings like a mutha) Not a real fast truck, but it weighs more than a T. I use a TH350 behind it and that works better than the two speed it would have had stock, due to the better first gear ratio. Although, the factory trans would have that cool Switch Pitch converter in it. You can wire it up to select a higher stall speed at the flip of a switch. Might be fun in a light vehicle. They also can suffer from low oil pressure issues due to the external oil pumps aluminum body getting worn. But if youve been on the Buick site you know that it can be fixed.
If you look in an old Motor Manual, the 4bbl version of this engine is claimed to have 11.0:1 compression.
I’ve seen that…also listed as 10.25:1 in others. It may actually be 11:1 as even if I use the good premium, it still rattles a little at WOT with the timing set to factory spec. Seems cylinder compression tests have been 190-210 range (if I remember correctly).
'64s with the aluminum heads were 11:1...iron headed '65s were 10.25...if it's a 2 barrel, it's 9:1 regardless of year...
just so everybody knows,i know know that a 300 is not a 310 nor a nailhead.i'm sorry for my ignorance.i know nothin of buicks except that i like the way they look.i promise that i will never ever call a 300 a 310 or a nailhead again.thanks for all the info everybody,i appriciate your efforts in educatin my dumb ***.
