I still consider the '63-66 era to be somewhat traditional in a sense, just at the tail end of it. I'm thinking about doing a few things to my '65 Mustang to make it a period correct, over the counter Ford built street/strip rod. Right now it has a Cobra mill with 3 deuces, and I'm thinking of bolting up the failed Paxton SN60 supercharger off pop's project and making a bonnet to cover the carbs. Add a Shelby hood, Rotunda tach with some 3" lap belts, traction bars, torque thrusts with bias plys up front and normal size piecrust cheaters out back...what do you guys think? Would this end up looking vintage or am I just messing up a clean car. Thanks, -Dean
I like the mid 60's too but I think in this case you would be messing it up.That's a real clean looking stang that's worth considerable cash even without the original motor.I'll bet it runs good enough with the Cobra in there. The paxton and bigger tires maybe but I think going further would not do it justice.Just my 2 cents
i say go for it. everything you said you want to do can be reversed if you decide later its not what you want. i personally think it would look cool though. goodluck.
You lost your mind...and Ill tell you why. What you have there is a 65 fastback, all by its self its a pretty sharp car, worth some bucks too. Once you put the Shelby hood on and the 3 inch lap belts and the torque thrusts, youll stand back and say ...wow looks almost like a Shelby. Magic word Shelby. Now you want to take it further and paint it wimbleton white with guardsman blue stripes. Then what do you have?? A 65 fastback that has lost its iden***y, and it still isnt a Shelby, no matter how many people see it and think it is, and they will. This is comming from someone who just sold a real 66 Shelby a month ago i owned for 15 years. During those 15 years i ve seen alot of fastback owners change their cars into something that they never were. If I had a fastback 65 mustang Id leave it alone. Mr. **** (who now owns a 56 chevy g***er)
Yeah, i agree. LEAVE IT ALONE! Except for a tube axle up front, some period wheels, radius the rear wells, and let the tires (BIG) stick out an inch. Other than that, just leave it alone. Oh yeah, a blower sticking out a teardrop hood scoop. Other than THAT, leave it ALONE
Go for it. Like the guy said, everything you proposed is reversible. I think I'd like it. For some reason I'm also a ****er for those rear leaf extension shackles. Back in the day (late 1960s?), when i was a little kid, I thought those looked awesome on all "cool" cars, especially Mustangs. I still do. Just don't do what HOT ROD did back in the 80s when they took one of these, stuck hideous fender flares on it and a way-gay custom interior in it. That was a tragic loss of a great car.
Yep, as another closet mustanger I say leave it alone. I like the open grille, gives it a mucsle look, I'd stay along those lines. With my '67, I think to myself "if this was 1968, this was my daily, what would I do?" Edelbrock intake, holley carb, old super tach, that kind of thing. I've been thinking of big and little torque thrusts with blackwalls, but I'm a cheapskate.
Cool thanks guys, ya I'll pretty much leave it alone. If it was in worse shape it would'a been done but I sure dont wanna mess up such a nice car. Paxton I will do though. Totally correct, reversable and should look awesome. How about bias plys? I cant stand radials. Nix on the cheaters either way. Thanks again, -Dean
Bias ply redlines would look sharp and period on there. If you drive it alot I'd stick with the radials though. On most fendered cars I'd rather have the drivability. Diamondback makes redline and goldline radials too.
I would love to do a mustang up like a old SCCA transam racer, period perfect but I'll save that talk for a muscle car board...
