this may have been discussed before. i usually don't say to much about what folks do to thier cars but when i see dudes trying to hide the very common sbc chevy motors , i call them belly button motors cause everyone has one, with other valve covers it makes me wanna puke. i've seen early olds rocket early lincoln dodge hemi desotot hemi chrsler hemi plymouth poly 390 ford thunderbird and even a pair of ford flatheads bolted to the exhaust manifolds with plug wires running thru the plug holes. they even make kits you can buy to accomplish this hey if your that embarresed to have a sbc in your car that you have to hide it well then REPLACE IT!!!!!!!! with a older motor. it's been said hey the're not relieable who started that BS story how do you think that old car got all those miles on it. being towed with a tow truck? maybe i should try to fit in better by putting chevy valve covers on my lincoln john
I hot glued eight briggs & stratton 6hp heads to my sbc..............looks killer and funs MUCH cooler.............
I'm actually thinking of running some Olds covers on my SBC but leaving the OLDS decals off. Why? You might ask? Basic. I like the way the OLDS covers look. Plain and simple. I don't give a rat shit about it looking like an OLDS or trying to fool people into thinking it is an OLDS. If someone looks at them and thinks that is my intention then I guess that's their tough luck. Personally, I have many more things weighing my shoulders down than what someone should choose to run for valve covers.
I have to agree with Curious Rash. If you can take the Olds part off, the fake Olds valve covers do look kinda cool. If you can wipe out the Oldsmobile part, I don't think they'd be looked down upon as much as they are.
Ya know....I've never really thought about it. Thank you. What's a lincoln john? Is that like a trailer ed?
And why do you think there are so many in rods and kustom cars? because the availability of parts they are easy to find and are cheap to build compared to most other motors out there. As for trying to change the look How about the guys who put an olds grille in a chevy or buick trim on a merc kinda the same dont you think. Just to be different at first. Then it catches on and theres a hundred others with it. And not to mention it looks good , too each his own imho .
I'm gonna build a Desoto and put a Mercury grill in it, then I am gonna add an Olds motor and put SBC valve covers on it next to the alternator filled with generator guts. Don't forget to make drum brakes look like discs......
Can we let this subject die? Covered many times, we all know the score, so replace the drama generating thread with some tech perhaps? Danny
yeah ummmmmmm .... ya kinda lost me on this one. Isn't the whole idea of "KUSTOM" to just use whatever you have and OR to make it as different and original as you can? Is someone putting 59" Caddy tail lights in the bed of their truck making it look like a Caddy? That question could go on and on and ON with so many different examples! I am in the process of welding, grinding and sculpting 3-D flames into the top and sides of my SBC covers and also welded tubes across the top under the sculpted flames for the wires to run through... I totally fail to see that as trying to disguise my SBC or being embarassed of what it is.... but do KNOW there aren't another set identical to them out there. HEY CTFuzz DO YOU HAVE ANY PICS OF THEM BRIGGS COVERS YOU MADE?
vintakes, Curious Rash is right about your post. Well said Curious Rash!!!!!!!! If you don't like the most successful modern engine of the automobile era, get a blindfold and ear plugs, the SBC Chevy isn't going away. The Olds covers are very cool. "Driver a cool short" Cruiser 49
Damn, I got a "fake" air cleaner too. I really must be a flamer! Good thing they just passed the same sex civil union thing here last week. I was only going for the first few seconds of shock value, figuring most rodders would know what the motor was. The people who get pissed off the most are the ones who realize they got fooled.
more lincolns on a chevy: The rest (in case you haven't seen it): http://positiveapeindex.blogspot.com/2006/12/jim-jake-jacobs-1934-ford-fordor.html
There was a car at Mooneyes Xmas show that had baby Hemi(Dodge or Desoto) covers on a SBC....open wheeled Roadster. Didnt look bad but just didn't seem "right".It took me a few minutes to convince a couple of old boys it was a Chevy,& I still dont think they believed me when I walked off....oh well.
for the chevy center bolt head there are no better looking valve covers then the olds. just got to ditch the olds and get a script chevrolet decal for them.
The really depressing thing is...I actually want those Lincoln covers to use on a Lincoln Y...been looking for a while...can only find the plain ol' truck ones. And, as long as it's Christmas time, & wishing's free, I'd take the finned Lincoln covers too.
I made a pair of Chevy valve covers for my Packard, I lost one of 'em on the way to The Turkey Rod Run, I thought they would stay on top of the original ones. The car started running real shitty so I pulled over into a gas station and this guy in a Fairlane came up behind me and said, "one of your valve covers flew off." When it came off it took one of the Rajah tips with it so the car was running on 7 cylinders, I didn't even know the valve cover had flown off. I couldn't find it on 1-4, it probably got crushed flat. If anyone has a no-name Packard/Studey/Hudson valve cover and a long script Chevrolet 235 front fill valve cover I'd buy them. BTW, I painted the covers Chevy orange.
