I remember a couple wooden crates when I was a kid sitting in our barn that were nos Kinmonts my father used to run them on the Roadster for a while, He always said they really never worked that well, I think he got big bucks for his nos ones quite a while back, I think around $800 a pair.
My front pair came off the Dave Gale (Gade?) Spencer clone roadster of the 1980's. I got them for my birthday a couple decades ago, but I know that Dad paid $400 for them. Pretty good investment he made for me, huh? Better than savings bonds, and a lot more fun.
can someone point me toward a thread or reference about why these things are such a big deal? how do they work etc?
I agree that the new hidden bidder thing (only on ebay motors items over $200) is annoying, but ebay will still see shill bidders, and they DO suspend shill bidders, and remember, the seller still has to pay the ebay fee's for the sale, which at $15,000 is quite high.
Hey, there is nothing wrong with being rich. if you work hard, and did it honestly, good for you. Paying tons of money to someone else to build you a car is the goldchainer mentality. But maybe the guy who bought those is building his car, in his garage, with his tools. So he really wanted them, and fought with other guys who also really wanted them, and paid top dollar. If I was a millionaire, I might have too. if I was rich, id still be building a car the old fashined way, Id just maybe have more time to do it. This whole "goldchainer" thing is getting foolishly out of hand. There is a difference between a wealthy guy with a "street rod" who knows nothing about it, and paid to have it built (goldchainer), and a wealthy guy who has a lot of money. My great grandfather came to this country in 1905 with nothing more than a pillow and a second pair of underwear. He got started in the clothing manufacturing business, and by the early 30's, he was bringing in $3200 a week. During the great depression! Id like to make half that a week in 2006. Point is, he started with nothing, worked his *** off aiming for the America Dream, and he made it. He also kept the working mans mentality untill the day he died. Being wealthy is nothing to be ashamed of, being a "car guy", who knows nothing about cars probably is.
Maybe not so crazy, my buddy sold a set earlier this year for 15k. Might be the new target price.....
The bottom of the market didn't fall out on genuine Arduns when those reproductions started being produced and sold. Same goes for the Deuces once steel repros hit the market, too. That said, I doubt the prices of genuine Kinmonts will nose-dive, either.
Thats a big WTF !!! Id rather have lincoln brakes they probably stop better. Which leads me to a question do the kinmonts stop good or what???? Thanks dave
I asked this question on the other thread while looking at the miniscule contact area the friction surface has. At least one guy said they didn't. I'd be a nice set of Bendix-style brakes in 12" would stop much better than the Kinmonts...
