Thanks. I appreciate that. Onward. I'm still building it. My dad was a greaser in the 40's and 50's. He built a few hot rods. His one rule (as was many of the day) was simple. Build what you want with what you have and be proud of it.

And my favorite line of his: If it don't run, Chrome it.

I say build it. You will be on a journey and you will learn alot about yourself, your skills and your personal aesthetic. Is everyone going to like? Nope. But as they say, there is an ass for every seat, and more often than not, 2 asses for every seat.

I must have missed this comment Nads, where was it? Useless?! Not in my book either. I want one so bad I can't stand it. And it will be a "tractor" not some silly pickup concoction.

I can’t believe some of the other posts here. It’s not like were picking on him because of something small like radials, colors or disc brakes.

I don’t see the correlation with the monstrosity in the rendering and a Traditional Hot Rod. WTF, should we let the guys with muscle cars and tuners show us there builds on here too? It's a Traditional Rod & Custom board.

Yea that’s right, go for it, you can build anything you want, but it don't belong here.

I'm gonna put whitewalls and fender skirts on my Mustang and try and hang with you guys 'cause "I think outside the box."

Blast-o-lene already made hot rod trucks...and they are still ugly. I don't understand the whole modified-make-what-you-want craze. Many truck cabs, Tudor sedans, and tubs are being hacked up into ugly piles of rubbish.

These 50's truck cabs were never meant to be fenderless, and no matter how you slice them up, the barn door firewall area is butt ugly.

Yes, everyone has a right to do what they want with their vehicle. Yes they do. However, you have a right to build something that makes me vomit, and in return, I have the right to be pissed off that my lunch came up. Traditional rods do not include roadsterized dumptrucks. It's nice old truck, make it a nice old boat-hauler or sell it to a farmer.

This board has gone sofft and diluted... you hippies think that anything with whitewalls and a keyboard is traditional. It's not. Ugly knows no bounds...

You can do what you want. I can say what I want. That's how America works. :D

I still think it looks ok. Taking a little liberty with a previous photo posted here. (I hope it's ok) I quickly photoshopped it into what it WILL actually look like.

I'm still doing it. At least it's American made huh?

This has been done and not too sure I like the outcome. It will attract some attention kind of like a horrific traffic accident on the side of the road, you dont want to see the gore but you still have to look!

Hey, I recognize that grille! Is is a Craftsman garden tractor?

At least cover the firewall with a full hood and keep the grille in the same era (area) as the rest of the truck.

Build what you want, of course. Just remember, you'll be stuck with something ugly for a long time to come!

I think that you can go ahead and build whatever you so choose, but since you are here asking opinions, I personally think it looks like an OSR centerfold of a VW/Massey Ferguson collision

I know this thread oughta to be killed by having a piano dropped on it but I have a feeling that this....erm....hot rod, will never be built. Fiberglassics is having a wet dream and it will simply remain that, mark my words. Don't worry about this, this will not go beyond the horrifying concept stage.
    Fiberglassics, prove me wrong.

  19. You asked for opinions, and you got 'em. Maybe you should build it anyway, but not post pics, it isn't very traditional, and you'll probably catch a lot of flack. That doesn't mean you can't learn a lot here and apply it to your project. A straight axle on split wishbones is a straight axle on split wishbones, whether you mount it on a T coupe, or a Mazda.

Yup, that's what I was thinking.

We all know people that buy project after project, talk about doing this or that, and never finish anything.

    Seven boats?

Are any of them seaworthy, or do you just like to talk about restoring them.

what's funny here is that most of the commentary is negative yet here we are on a traditional board telling this guy what a bad idea it is.. Now I don't get on my soapbox very often but as far as I'm concerned, back in the day anything went.. Yes, this is no 2 door sedan that has been chopped and channeled to look like the mad max cars most on here support, traditional shit is damn near dead. I see nobody sectioning cars and making things look like the way they were! (balanced) Very few are tastfully done. This guy wants to try something different then let him. Don't be such pricks about it.. I'm done typing now because I have to work,

''Traditional shit'' is NOT nearly dead, take a look around, you think its near dead? no seriously, 21,000 members strong, who share the same passion. Whether they build or not, doesnt matter, theres still plenty of us around.

As far as this build goes... prove everyone wrong.

Would i do a large scale modified? yes out of a early ford AA, i would do it tastefully, and not rat rod looking. The 50 is a nice truck as is, but to make it what you want, is gonna need alot of metalwork to look good. And to be respected by the naysayers atleast a little bit hehe. Honestly as is, the cab is very wide, the cowl needs to get that fender dimple cut outa there, and the frame would need to look proportionate to the size of the wheels and cab. Id seriously use a differant grille, the willys grille, possibly the squarest vehicle ever made lol, doesnt look good with one of the roundest trucks ever made, i say go with the idea, just make it work, make it all come together and look right. Id use the original grille if you could. shit, id shorten the width of the grill and use the stock fenders, would take a bit to make it look ok though. There was a young guy on here who is making a roadster outa a fullsize cab he cut down, it looks really awsome. i think it was a 47 chevy im probly wrong, it might be a 37. someone here will know what im talking about, it isnt painted as far as i know.

Hey Richard D, welcome back, I missed you.

Oh fuck I brought this thread BTT.

  25. If you really want to build it... do so. If you're kinda' on the fence, I'd say don't.

Personally, it's not my cup of tea. I'm not big on the rat rod style of stuff, or a lot of RPU's where a 4dr tub is cut off short, and doesn't look anything like a real roadster pickup. And I don't think it'd look all that cool with that big, wide, full-of-seams-and-crap firewall out there, and the big 'divots' where the rounded corners of the hood and fenders had been. But that's just the opinion of a sick fuck who thinks it's a good idea to stick an MG TD body on a tube frame behind a 440. But I just wanna' go fast cheap and don't give a damn how it looks.

I think the guys who've said that it'll have very little cash value are dead right.

It's hard not to sink several hundred to a grand or more into making something old run (master cyl, wheel cyl's, some wire, hoses, belts... you get the picture) and be really reliable. Unless you have an awesome 'everything is really up to date' parts car or something. Easy to get on the wrong side of the Value-to-Investment equation. Don't ask me how I know...

If it were my piece of tin, I'd probably stick it on a newer pickup chassis, chopped severely (think of windows like a pack of 100 size cigarettes) and maybe even sectioned a couple inches. Custom grille and roll pan. Really evil tempered badass 327 or something.

Said it before and i'll say it again. Why put all that labor, and money too, (no matter how many parts you already have, you'll still pour money in it), into something that you'll never get it out of.

its still true, just because some parts can be put together doesn't mean they should. If you have to do something with the cab find a 1/2 ton frame and build a cool little pickup, they made a ton of those trucks and parts are not hard to find even down here in the rust belt.

The same time , effort, and money on a beat up model A would get you 100 times the cool factor.
    Good luck dude.

This guy doesn't care about style or design ONE BIT- It's as it's already been said- HE WANTS THE ATTENTION. Having traveled around the country and seen this style of abomination cause in stir in all parts of America- that's EXACTLY what he'll get. I have a feeling he's the kind of guy that would stand on a corner with a big "KICK ME IN THE NUTS" sign for the same kind of attention. There needs to be some kind of dump button for these posts because I'm ninety percent ashamed for even adding to it- but it just WON'T GO AWAY!!!

Since you got the 1 ton almost free (Thats a great start), why not fix it up, make it road worthy, then put the time and money you would have spent on that abortion into building a traditional modified and have a traditional hauler/race car combo?
