Any Texans on here that have experience getting a ***le? My 46 Ford has no VIN and no ***le. Would it be easier to buy a "historical do***ent"? Or jump through the TXDOT hoops to get legit ***le/VIN ? CJ
Try local swap meets for someone selling ***les or you can get what is known as a Bonded ***le in Texas. You fill out the paperwork put up a cash bond, get a ***le with registration and in a few years, if no one claims the car is stolen, the ***le becomes negotiable. Really, it is easier to buy a ***le from a paper dealer, than to go through the h***le of the bonded ***le. I have the same problem, my 46 Ford has had the frame clipped, front and rear so there is no number on it anywhere. I am going to buy paper, stamp the numbers from the paper on the frame and go to the DMV to get it ***led and registered in my name.
Buy an old car with a vin and ***le. I think you can guess the rest. Without one or the other, from my experience, you are in a world of hurt. I wouldn't know where to start, except at the couthouse, and pray you get a nice and knowledgeable clerck. You will eventually have to have a DPS dood come out to check your car and papers, (at his convenience), or you will have to get your car to where he works, and you can't drive there, cuz it gots no tags 'n ***le. That date can be easy or hard, depending on how well you are prepared and how good a day John Law has had up until he saw you. Good luck. P.S.-smaller county seats seem to be A LOT more helpful and informative.
If you have a friend who can get you an inspection "green sheet", some tax offices won't require the officer visit because the VIN will be on the green sheet and we all know that all inspection stations are 100% honest.
I would never do this - but... A good friend bought a ***le from Minnisota for $75. Took it and a "reciept" to the county office and there was not much h***le at all. The gal did look up in a book to confirm the format of the ***le from Minn. No inspection or "green sheet " was needed. I would say Texas is one of the easiest places to get a project ***led.
You'll need bill of sale and "old" ***le. With a bill of sale, you can get a bonded Texas ***le...which means you pay a bit more, but if no one comes after you for a year (maybe two) then you convert to a regular ***le. Buying a ***le would work also. You still need a bill of sale. Also, if the ***le is not a texas ***le, you DO NEED a greensheet from an inspection facility. Due to the age of the car, it would be a safety inspection only but you still have to have the inspection. Also, the ***le must be signed by the original owner, not a double transfer situation...i.e. if the ***le was signed by Granny Smith to Bill Jones and you are Sam White, Sam White's not getting the car ***led until it's in Bill Jones' name first. This is all first hand knowledge, not "i have a friend who had a friend who did this to get it done." The 40 Plymouth Coupe I just bought has a third party signed as owner...they're fixing that before I pay for the car...too much h***le trying to find original owner. I just ***le my 55 where the owner, a dead person, had to sign the bill of sale I had instead of her husband. That was quite an interesting fix also.
You can get a ***le in your name without the green sheet, but it cannot be registered to drive until the vehicle is inspected.
The car is not running, I have been holding off puting any time or $$ in it until I know I can ***le/register it. I was told I could get a VIN issued by the state by DPS (once they deem the car not to be a stolen vehicle). I was also told they could come to my place to inspect it and make sure it is not stolen. Still waitiing on one of them to call me back. I try again every couple of months to see if the story changes. They made it sound like it would be no big deal. Just a matter of getting ahold of them at the right time I guess. I would load it up and take it to them if they would just let me knowtime and place.
Send off for or download and print paperwork from International ***le Service(you know, all one word.com) you will send them 120.00 (dream up a VIN number) they will send you back all necessary paperwork from Alabama which is a Bill of Sale State..take it to your local DMV/DPS and do an out-of-state ***le transfer to Texas..remember to keep the sale price low so you don't pay so much *&%$ing tax.In your case you can by one of those blank number plates they advertise and stamp it yerself...you will have a Texas ***le for less than 200.00! worked for me! this is great for cars that do have VIN numbers because you will wind up with a ***le with YOUR number, important if you ever go for resale, then numbers match....rixrex
I've read and been through all the other suggestions, bonded, green sheet, inspections, swaparooney off some other car, I'm tellin ya my way is the easiest...works for me!....rixrex
I used Lawrence ***le complany in Tyler to get the ***le for my 55 Olds. Cost me $200 to them, another $120 to the local Tax office, and only took about two weeks.
Rixrex, please post a link to this ***le company. I tryed to find it, but found a house-forclosure site. thanks for the info all
Dad tried to do it the hard way when he put his '28 on the road. Took about 6 months of pure bs at the local license branch... back and forth... answers and rules that seemed to keep changing, you name it. He even got rejected one time because "the front tires are smaller than the rear, so obviously it's been modified" (I guess the 454 with "fenderwell" style headers wasn't a bigger clue)
Yes, use a ***le service. They will go to TCDOT and find a vin# for you for about $15. Then you'll fill out a mechanics lean for another $125. We've done this with several old bikes. Les
So I called Lawrence ***le, they told me to call TXDOT for a form (because of the no VIN thing). I called TXDOT again, she said they would have to look at the car to get me this form. And guess what, all the guys that do this are out of town at meetings this week. And I left my call back number again. She said they will call me back on Friday (tomorrow). I am holding my breath that they will call me back tomorrow. LOL
I've also posted a lost ***le. I'm js. If you have any luck please let me know and I'll do the same for you. Read my post. I've tried everything legal but all has failed so far. I plan to call the ***le co again tomorrow and ask them about the rejection notice.
DPS called me back, (I almost fell over) and said they could not deem the car as a non theft vehicle without any numbers to refer to. He told me to call the TXDOT office. I told him TXDOT is the one that told me to get the form from him to get the form from them to............... Anyhow, he was supposed to come by and check out the car, not sure if he did because he has been "out in the field" again every since I talked to him last week......so know I am waitng for a call back again.
