Multi Carb intakes for small block Fords?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by RileyRacing, Dec 12, 2006.

  1. Boy, this is outta character for me...a Ford question!

I had a friend in High School that had a 5.0 Mustang with a dual quad crossram intake, he said it was a Shelby piece. It's the only one I've ever seen. So, fast forward 13 years....;)

We were talking at work today about it, and were wondering if there were any other multi-carb intakes out there? A 4X2 would be pretty cool, but were there any made?

    Just curious,

    Jay

    Jay-

the Ford Racing folks back in the mid 60's offered up a four carb Weber manifold complete with 48 IDA's' - when it comes to multi-carb manifolds, it's the coolest thing EVER! retail (with carbs) was $595.00 (I think); that's more like $2500 in today's jing, which is why you don't see all that many of 'em. Most of them found their way into AC Cobras...

  6. That's what I'm talking about! I'll have to dig thru some of the old mags Dad has and check for that... And I know I've seen pictures of that too now that you mention it. I'll look in my Cobra books.

    Thanks,

Here's a few, a Hilborn, Blue Thunder 2x4, 3x2, and a couple of the Weber Ida setups.

I'm going to try to make a 6x2 intake from a Offy 2x4 and a 6x2 blower top.

Not quite what you were looking for, but I like the single & dual Cross Boss intakes using the inline Autolites on Boss 302s....

    Expensive.

    Here's a single:

I like the Offenhauser 2x4 manifold with two cross ram adapters. I have a picture from the Offy catalog showing the setup on the front page of my website. It is the manifold on the lower left.

  13. Not having been alive for most of the sixties, I wouldn't know first hand... but I've heard that man-a-fre made multi 2bbl setups for lots of different motors.

But I'm sure than then as now, more SBC ones were sold than everything else combined.

Bump to the top for a very worthy thread with lots of stuff to drool over.

a fellow hamber (ttate) has fabricated his own 3x2 setup using a 5.0 lower manifold and a aluminum adaptor, i saw it a few years back and i think he was running 3 97's, pretty neat homemade setup.

  17. That's pretty cool, and seems do-able enough too.

And everyone else, that's some cool shiz-nit! I can't even imagine how much that inline setup would be now!

Thanks, and keep the stuff coming!

Oh yeah, and dmarv, is that setup still available?

About 10 years ago I saw a Cross Boss Carb (not the intake, just the carb) at Carlisle. Looked to be in decent shape and had an $1800 price tag on it.

There was a complete down draught Weber setup for sale down here last year for $2100. I regret not buying it.

  25. That sucks. I passed on a dual 2 bbl intake for a 2.2 Chrysler last spring I feel the same way about... woulda been cool in a little modified.

And, Rewired and metalshapes, them sure are purrrrrdy! I went to that website and them manifolds (3x2) aren't as bad as I thought price wise.

    Thanks, keep it comin!

    I've been pondering a multi-carb setup for the roller 5.0 I'm building.
Is there a setup that can compete with a single well matched 4 bbl and intake for a streetable performance SBF? Seems counter-intuitive, but didn't Ford even replace dual quads on their racing 302s after one year?

Yup. SCCA gave Shelby/Ford permission to run dual quads on the B-production Boss 302's for the longer courses (Watkins Glen, Laguna, Sears Point, etc) for part of the 1970 season but -like most multiple carb set-ups then and now- they didn't make as much power and were troublesome so they were yanked and the single 4 barrel was run.

Buddy-Bar did a very limited run of these intakes. When they got pulled off the cars the Shelby name was ground off the intake and they either got scrapped or sold to fans/enthusiasts. I'm sure it may have been offered over the counter too but this is definitely something you don't see everyday. I've got a '70 Boss 302 motor in the shop right now if anybody wants a pic of what these dual quad Shelby intakes look like.
