The proportions are strange. The shape is odd. And white on a hot rod has only been pulled off a handfull of times. Can I just not like the thing without it being some sort of personal attack against the builder? I'll go one further - there's not a single car pictured in this thread that I really like. I understand some of thier significance, but esthetically I just don't like them.

It's like telling me I have to like rollerblading because the guy doing it is really good at it.

I think it's ugly too, and the man said himself he didn't build it for me so he accomplished his goal. For every famous rod builder there is an uncelebrated excellent rodbuilder also. Come on I know you know some. They should rename this thread to "let's swing on Lil John's meat" :p

you said some very nice things and i appreciate that. then you blew it.
saying it looks like a toaster is an insult to jimmy kilroy's tallent.
i brought him a rolling chasis and told him i had to have it back in 5 weeks in order to finish in time to drive back to indy. i told him i was going to scotchbrite the body and paint a scallop on it. there was no wood buck to work from or artists drawings. those of you that recognize it as looking like the stroh's car that porky (fat jack) and me built are right on, and really old. i loved that car and allways wanted one.
the reason i wasn't going to paint it was it would be a sin to cover what i thought i would get from him.
there aren't enough craftsmen in the world and i was proud to have one do something for me.
that body started out as 2 flat sheets of aluminum leaning against the wall.
when moal pulled up in front of my house and rolled it out of the trailer i couldnt believe what i saw. there wasn't a file mark on it. he formed those panels, welded them together and planished the welds and hemed them over a tube structure he made and bolted to my frame. i said the hell with scothbrite i'm going to polish it. i did it because jimmy deserved it. he's my friend and i'm also proud of that. how many people can finish their cars in bare metal?
every morning when i go in my garage i look at it shake my head and smile an realize how lucky i am that it's mine.

When I first saw the pictures of the car, I thought it was that gaudy assed chrome paint. After reading the reason behind it, I have to agree with you 100% on choice of finish.

Although this style of car isn't one of my favorites, I still greatly admire the craftsmanship that went into it, and all the other cars you have built.

In the end, that's all that matters, isn't it?! :)

Can't wait to grab the upcoming mag and read all the cool details on this latest Buttera build! It'll go in the collection along with several other issues of various titles that have chronicled the work of Lil John over the decades!

  14. yeah, but I will chime in and say that I think the car looks rather nice, esp considering the work that went into that body. Although I do like alot of the traditional rods....I like the hi-tech stuff Buttera did in the late 70's to 80's and those cars of his still inspire me today, moreso than the new stuff some other builders come up with

Everybody that posts on here deserves to be shown some respect.

Even if John's car isn't to your liking, he still deserves basic respect.

Just because he's a celeb doesn't give any one the licence to state hurtful and mean things.

Why do us Americans consider celeb's "fair game"?

I wish I had John's drive and engineering, fabrication and aesthetic-design talents.

I also wish I could have been a part of as much racing history as he's been.

I don't care much for the car, but I'm sure John could give a rat's ass about that. The wheels aren't doing it for me and I'm not much of a fan of modifieds. I dug the paint job long before anyone mentioned it was polished aluminum (which is what I thought it was to begin with since it is one solid piece).

I'm just glad John graces us with our presence from time to time. I really wish he would write up a tech post or two, or tell us stories about people, cars and places that he has SEEN and we've only READ about.

Lil John is a hot rod ninja...

  18. Seems wrong to see FNG under his name. It should be HOT ROD NINJA!!! Stu

Lil john's been whittling on metal since I was reading HOTROD hidden in my folder in 7th grade English, so he has earned the right to build em like he wants em, but what if you machined some artillery looking wheels like Dave Lane did for George Poteets 32 sedan delivery still being built, it would really help the car to me.

  20. Hey John-
Like many others here, you have been an inspiration to me since I was a child. I don't think I've EVER seen a car built by somebody else that I like EVERYTHING about...that's why I'm building my own. If you ever get the time, could you post some pics of that thing(or any others) being built?

  21. I still have the Fabrication article he wrote (about 25 years ago) listing the different materials and their uses.
I use it like a school kid used a reading primer.

I really want to see a naked shot of that front suspension.

I was introduced to John's work in the late '60s when he was building race cars. At the time his craftsmanship was virtually without peer. The stuff he built looked like rolling jewelry (and performed VERY well too - never forget that his abilities go far beyond just making cars that look great).

I've seen his new car in person (at the '06 CHRR), and it wasn't to my taste either - but I have to say, the styling works better in real life than in photos. I kept telling myself I wasn't sure about it, but kept going back for another look (especially at the details - the front axle assembly, for instance, just leaves you speechless - billet or not).

In any case, I'm very glad to see him here - and hope he stays around. I'm glad too that he resisted the urge to throw up a nasty reply. Plenty of lesser men would have taken the low road in that regard.

Just one question John. Do you pronounce it Bew-tear-ah or Butter-ah?

    Welcome to the HAMB!

But you know what, sitting here in the stands on my couch, boy when I get done building my version ah next week, ah I mean the week after, ah after the holidays, ah after I get my tax check? well you get the point mine will be way better. For me growing up Lil' John and his creations were Iconic. Probably cuz my dad had such respect for him. Back in the day he designed a model for Revell. It was a 26 Sedan DELIVERY. It seemed as though he was reading pops mind. Shortly before the model was released my dad finised his own T sedan delivery. Which was especialy cool since Ford never put a back door in anything until 28. My dad had an opportunity to sit and talk with John about his car. It was one of the highlights of his life.

Yea his new car is a little farther than my mind can grasp right now but that is what makes it innovative. I'll probably want to copy it in a few years.
