I am building a 29 ford roadster on a model a frame. I want to know the best steering box for this. Is the reversed corvair or the F-100 gearbox better? I want the gearbox mounted under the dash not along side the frame rail. Anyone got some suggestions?
Here is a link to an excellent steering box http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=142985 here is another excellent post http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=77658 But it looks like alot of guys are using the bmw boxes here is the post with the year of boxes and model info used. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22098
I could be wrong, but I don't think you were asking about cowl steering. I believe a Corvair box is too light duty to use on a Model A. I would either use an F100 (53-56 Ford P/U) or an F1 (48-52 Ford P/U) steering box. You can mount either of these in the stock location (where the original Model A steering box went) on a Model A frame. You will have to do a bit of surgery to both the flange and the frame in either case however. Tardell says to cut the flange off the F100 or F1 box and weld a Model A flange to it, then you can use the stock bolt holes in the Model A frame. That can be done or you can use the existing flange on either box but you'll have to trim it down to fit in the rail. An F1 box has a slightly smaller flange and I think would be easier to work with within an A frame rail. Check out this book for more info on Tardel's method... http://www.verntardel.com/catalog/unnecessary.html
