Finally some new pics of my car....... Any comments, questions, concerns?? I want to know what all of you think.
Well the front cross member is ****py and is getting changed. What are you reffering to when you say rear x member? I still need to put in driveshaft hoops. Some temporary bracing has been put in for now, if thats what you are talking about.
Care to tell me what you mean by that? I was looking for some helpful input. I didn't built the crossmembers. Merry Christmas folks. Dave
Looks like a fun project! The rear crossmember is shorter/narrower than most, looks different but looks fine to me . The front doesn't look bad IMO; again, it's different but it doesn't look as bad as some of the ****py looking overdone Z'd frame rails that some guys use to lower the car. Merry Christmas! Hank
Looks cool. I like the narrow rear ???perch???. And the front end is the exact set-up I just saw at Pinkees for some high dollar rod he's building, with the spring-over the cross member. But it didnt have as much of an arch in it.
I was referring to the visible rear cross member that transverse spring is bolted to. It appears structurely unsafe unless there is more than photos show. You will have a fun ride but a better one if it doesn't break.
Z'd frames are fine but as Hanksville refers to, make it structurely sound. I have seen some very marginal frame hack jobs without sufficient (or any) gussets or whatever makes it safe for the road.
I agree, but I like different. If it were mine I don't think I would change it a whole lot, other than checking the welds, adding gussets and general smoothing out. The world really doesn't need another t-bucket type front spring perch.
Thanks guys! I wish I could post bigger pics but my digital camera died and I can't get batteries today, haha. I like the way the front cross member is done, but not how is has been built. It needs to look smoother I think. It doesn't work for me like it is now. The rear is pretty strong and was welded by a certified welder. Lots of gussets are going on this baby. I want a safe ride. The rear cross memeber it self is a big piece of steel pipe and is very strong. I've forgotten what the thinkness of it is. A new better spring perch for the rear is going to be built to mount under the spring like the front, so it will come down and back under the spring. With blocks under it to adjust ride height. More ****py cell phone pics to come. Dave
A few more pics. The rear spring perch ****s and needs to be redone, it's not even straight. Drive shaft hoops would be a good idea as well.
Car "looks" good - I think - the pictures ****! Need 'em bigger and focussed if you want some constructive input. From what I can see, though, I really like the looks of the front crossmember - it has a great mechanical look to it. And the spring saddle for the rear looks really clean - nice work. Steve
are those just split 40 radius rods on the rear end? if so you better beef them up cause ill guaruantee that they will wrap up on you. overall its got a real cool look
Hey 'Kid, Looking good so far. What's that sticking up inside the driver's door outside the frame? Flatman
I really wish I could get some better picks of this thing for you guys. I believe those are later 40's (46 to 48) rods and I do question the strength of them on the rear end. We shall see. Hey Flatman, that would be the remains of the original seat frame. Sorry for not staying in touch with you better. How have you been these days? Dave
Looking better. My comments were totally meant to be constructive. You don't need to be the same as anyone else....Be an innovator not a copy cat.! Start your own tradition for others to copy.
27KID, I think your car is super. I wish I had seen that rear spring mount before I did the one on my roadster. Strength? The only way that I can see it not being strong enough would be if it is made from materials that are not of sufficient wall thickness and /or shoddy welding. And you have already said that the welder is to be trusted. The 40 and later radius rods can also be trusted if they are not abused. My 1940 Ford had them for about 10-12 years. 350 Chevy w/auto trans. No problem. The ONLY reason that they aren't still under it is I couldn't get as good a ride with the cross spring as I have now with parallel leafs. And my roadster has full length 40 rear radius rods on the rear and a flathead with stick shift trans. 8.00 x 16's on the rear and I'm not a gramma driver. Rule of thumb, light car, light to medium power plant, small to medium traction. The radius rods shouldn't give you any problem. The heavier the car, the more power that you are throwing onto them, and the more traction that there is at the rear wheels. Then you can start wrapping them up as it is called. Good luck with your car 27kid,it looks like it will be a neat ride and a lot of fun. Later, flathead dools
