Got some tranny questions for you guys. Can a 700 out of no where loose all its gears? no reverse no low no 2nd no d or od? fluid is clean and topped off detent cable is adjusted proberly and in working order but the tranny will not power the car? im at a loss here and need some info. ive never heard or seen a tranny drop off the face of the earth with in 5 miles as this one did. any help would be great
Not a help with that exact trans, but I had a CATASTROPHIC failure a couple years ago with a 2 year old Chrysler automatic trans- it destroyed EVERY gear with one light POP! Problem was a plugged cooler line. Inside it looked like a grenade blew- happened 16 miles from my house- NO warning.
Could be the pump has failed.Check your fluid level with engine off .Then check it with engine runing. If level doesnt go down when engine is running the pump aint working.GREGG
Another thought...are ya sure the shipper trailered it there? If he flat-towed it for any reason, that could toast the tranny pretty quick!!
Perhaps some of the old advice that was given to you regarding same trans might help?? "Close enough without the gauage" might not be close enough when dealing with the touchy 700R4?? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=130463&highlight=trans
If it had been running fine, I'll bet it's the pump also. Here is another thought though. Any weird racket before hand? You didn't shear your flexplate did you? I have very little experience with the 700r4 but I do with the 4l60e which is basically the electronic version. Alot of people have cracked their flexplates and thought they lost the tranny. This is at least an easy one to rule out or not.
Thank you the all mighty who knows all. but i did have it done with a guage after i got it close enough my self. it was done by the trans shop around the corner from me. So go bake some fucking cookies
sounds like the front pump is fried or it has dirt blocking a passage in the valve body. both are common problems. I agree if it was flat towed that would hurt it if it went far that way. try holding the brake and applying throttle in gear. That will build lots of pressure and can blow a spec of dirt out. its worked for me before.
Not on a 700R4 (my transmission is an AOD), but I lost the whole thing at once, also. Turns out that the splines on the output of the converter stripped, which resulted in no power transfer. The transmission itself was ok, but it got no torque from the motor....... Kind of an unusual failure, but maybe something similar could be the problem.
I work in a transmission shop and have seen a few 700R4's where the insides of the torque converter break loose. Instant no gears.
Well excuse me for throwing a hint out there that I thought might help. I won't bother next time....asshole and no where in your other post did you mention that you took it to a professional shop.
Please dont I dont value your opinion. And im preety sure you dont know shit about transmissions. much less the rest of a car
I feel for ya bud. PM Crosley, he's a transmission guru in AZ, perhaps he can steer you in the right direction. He might miss this post with it being the busy Christmas holiday season so you should contact him instead of waiting for him to see this post. Good luck http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/member.php?u=62
DirtyT, My 700R4 took a dump last year. Heard a clunk and couldn't go over 15 miles an hour after that and barely make it home. It had no reverse and it would barley move forward with a lot of gas.. "Drive a cool short" - make mine a custom Cruiser 49
I am a bit late to the game here. If trans has good pressure and will NOT move in any gear 1-2-3-4-R I would suspect the converter spline hub inside the converter . The hub can break from the turbine and all power transfer stops
