Rear-end for a Model A?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 63CadGuy, Dec 27, 2006.

  1. OK, so I just bought this '29 Model A Sedan that I will start working on this summer and want to start looking around for a rear-end for it. My question is what rear-ends are you guys running in your Model A's, what cars are they out of and what widths are they?

There was a question similar to this a short time ago.

Knowing what engine your gonna run would be a big help.

I rebuilt the stock model A rear end and went with 3:54 gears. It had a 39' trans and a chevy 283. Cruised at 75mph. Would definatly run that combo again.

  4. the style you're planning on building will matter too-- a heavily channeled fenderless car would want a wider rear than a highboy or unchanneled fendered car. Also, do you care about having an era specific piece, or would just any old rear do?

  5. My plans are for a 350 olds motor and a 4" channel. I'm not looking for a ground s****er stance, but will modify the ch***is some.

It looks like you want an open drive rear so consider which bolt pattern and rear suspension type you want, like 4 3/4 chev early Ford 5 1/2, or small ford 4 1/2.

It is about whatever is available, works for you, and fits.

Here is my rear end set up on my 29 tudor. The rear end is an 8" out of a 68 mustang. I am sorry but I do not remember the mesurements on it. I like the tires to be tucked in close to the body so I used this rear and resessed the wheel wells for clearance.

Do you have a side profile shot of the car?

I have a '69 bronco 9-inch under my '29 sedan. Fits real good.

S10 rears fit well from what I have heard, if you don't mind the mismatch bolt pattern.

I'm putting a 40's banjo under my Tudor - thinking about a quickchange in the future. They are a little wider than an A rear, but on a Tudor, it will probably be just fine.

I just looked through my pictures and all the pictures I have are at an angle, no clean side profile shots. I will have to get some. Let me know if it is something you are really wanting.

Sure I'd like to see the pic, but don't go out of your way to get it. I am trying to decide on wheel & tire size for my own Model A, but I think the pics so far have helped make my decision. :)

I'm running a late 70's Pontiac 10 bolt posi rear, about 60" wide. They are cheap, easy, and readily available. Quickchange in the future, but for now this one works great.

I have a 8" out of a 77 Granada. I think the measurement was 51". I remember doing a lot of research on it before I bought it and it was a prefect fit. I'm using coil overs and radial bars with a panhard bar for suspension. The gearing was real high at 2.80 but I'm told it will be OK with my 700r4, we'll see. It's not exactly the traditional set up but the parts and price were readily available. Hope this helps. How about a foto of your project?

  22. Thanks for all the input so far, it helps a ton. Gives me some stuff to start looking for.

  23. Are those six lug wheels? I know the older series nissan pickups all had six bolt wheels.
