That's interesting...not the first 'glass fabber to move on, maybe the market is glutted. I bought a set of molds a few years ago from a guy in TN that was moving out of street rods and into race cars...I guess you have to go to where the market drives you.
Gibbon is no longer in business. The fadcility was sold as well as the molds, and he moved back to Kearney, NE he is currently building rat rods there.
I really don't know if kearney has all the cool guys or not. Kyle took a business that his dad started in the early to mid 1970's and through his own excesses ran it down the tubes. Just goes to show what illegal drugs and other illegal things can do to a person and his income.
A friend of my dads has been in contact with the guy that bought the molds. I belive he was most of the 32 and 33/4 molds. I will try to find his number.
Christ I hope not. I got a gibbon 32 roadster body .. cant remember what the number is on it but its a real piece of shit! There are better bodies out there. it looks like the asshole was into drugs when this one was layed up! Ill fix er though and when im done no one will ever know but when im asked later whose body it is im gonna have to have amnesia....... Dvae
Yeah, I hope those molds go away as well..for everyone's sake. I had a '32 5 window Gibbons body...what a piece of crap! The passenger door skin was separating from the frame and there were serious stress cracks forming in both of the upper corners of the trunk opening. At the time I was prepared to fix things with the assistance of my brother who is very knowledgable about 'glass stuff. He said that he could fix it but he was more concerned about what was causing the stress to begin with. He suggested that there may have been bigger issues hiding in the construction of the body. In the end I changed plans, sold the car and bought steel. I don't know much about Kyle but there have been alot of nasty rumors surrounding the closing of the operations doors.
I have not been able to verify this story, but supposedly some of the molds were sold to someone back in Nebraska. At one time the molds were to notch, but over the years molds will deteorate, and these molds evediently did not have any tender loving care given to them. That is too bad, because these molds were made from cherry parts that were restored by Dwight. When the operation was located in Gibbon, NE, this was top notch fibreglass.
the only thing i heard is dwight was gonna retire and the kid took over the main business and moved to charolette. I guess he though the grass was greener there. Then i guess racing and drugs became more important than the body business. Oh ya sometime in there i think he got married and there were more pics of his wife in the gibbon catalog than the bodies he was selling LOL. Too bad its just a case of a another drug using kid gonna take daddys shit an set the world on fire but. Dave
Dwight has been basically retired for several years now. He kept what was called Last Chance Restorations, and did some work on the Packards for several years. I run into Dwight every once and awhile. Still is a super nice guy. Yes, it is too bad the young one went astray. For several years he did O.K. in Charlotte, and then it just went downhill.

Last I heard Kyle was concentrating on the Viper line of Gibbon Fiberglass and doing some ratrods. Give the guy a break. Is there anyone of you who hasn't screwed up at one time or another. With the help of a fine family he will get it back together.

I have known Dwight for over 30 years, and I agree with Rustymetal that he is a stand-up guy. Never heard of anyone that has had trouble dealing with Dwight. Yes, I hope with family help that Kyle will get his stuff together again. I have known this family way to long not to want this to happen
